Abandoned car causes another Metra crash in Des Plaines

For the second time in a week, Des Plaines police are investigating who abandoned a stolen car on Metra’s North Central Service Line causing a crash that delayed inbound train service.

The latest crash occurred early Monday when the 6:12 a.m. inbound Metra train, the first of the day from Antioch to Chicago, struck an abandoned Nissan sedan on the Canadian National railroad track near the intersection of Rand and Seegers. It’s the same area where an inbound Metra train collided with an abandoned Honda coupe last Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Nobody was in the vehicle at the time of the collision Monday and no injuries were reported on the train, a Metra spokesman said. The train was delayed about 20 minutes.

Des Plaines Deputy Police Chief Mike Kozak said the vehicle had been stolen from Elgin. The previous crash involved a car that had been stolen from Morton Grove, police said.

“We have it under investigation now,” Kozak said. “We’re trying to connect the dots. We’re talking with Morton Grove, Elgin and Metra.”
