Funky Munky staying put, owner says

Call it a funky coincidence.

Jodi Galle, owner of Funky Munky in Lake in the Hills, says her store suffered a case of mistaken identity after Funky Things, a women’s clothing and accessories store a half-mile down the road in Algonquin, closed in September.

Customers have told Galle they thought her business was the one that closed, and at least one person posted in dismay at the rumored news on the store’s Facebook page, Galle said.

“It has had a detrimental effect,” she said.

But Galle has a message for her customers — Funky Munky is alive and kicking, and has no plans to leave the space it has occupied for nine years. Altogether, the business has been in McHenry County for two decades, she said.

“We have people who were shopping here as teenagers that now are brining their kids to shop, people who moved out of state who come back to visit family,” Galle said.

The 1,600-square foot store’s inventory is so eclectic that both parents and children can find everything from tie-dye Onesies to music T-shirts, body jewelry, Hacky Sacks, posters, iPad cases and convertible mittens that are popular among smokers and texters, Gallo said.

Feathers worn as hair accessories — first modeled by Gallo and her three employees — have become popular this year, she said.
