Suspect charged in fatal Waukegan hit-and-run

A 22-year-old Waukegan man faces up to 15 years in prison after his arrest on in connection with a hit-and-run crash last week that killed a 73-year-old woman.

Christian T. Jensen, of the 700 block of Grand Avenue, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death of personal injury, a Class 1 felony, according to a statement by Waukegan police.

Jensen was in custody Sunday at the Lake County jail, according to jail records.

His arrest came after a Glenview resident saw news coverage of the hit-and-run death of Pilar Ponce, of Waukegan, and contacted that village’s police department with information about a possible vehicle involved, Waukegan police Cmdr. Gabe Guzman said in a news release.

Glenview police located the vehicle, then contacted Waukegan police who took Jensen into custody.

Ponce was found laying in the roadway at Grand Avenue and Pine Street in Waukegan about 7:40 p.m. Thursday. She died after being taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, police said.

During the investigation, officers obtained video from an area business that showed the make and model of the truck, Guzman said. The vehicle is a light-colored, full-sized Chevrolet pick up truck single cab.
