Elgin man attempts to flee police in stolen vehicle

An Elgin man was being held in Kane County jail on $20,000 bail after he was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing a police officer.

Jeffery Van Ningen, 37, of the 900 block of Bode Road, is also charged with two counts of driving under the influence, driving with a revoked license, and possession of less than 15 grams of a substance containing cocaine, police said.

Police responded to a call around 10 p.m. Thursday on a report a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado had been stolen from the 0-100 block of North Geneva Street.

“The responding police officer remembered seeing a vehicle that matched the description about an hour earlier. The police officer began to search the area and again saw the suspect driving a vehicle matching the description,” Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said.

Van Ningen sped away when police attempted to pull him over, driving up to 21 mph over the speed limit, police said. He headed onto Route 20 where traffic was stopped, and was apprehended after he attempted to run from the vehicle, Olafson said. Van Ningen suffered a cut near his eye in the process, she said.

He is due in Kane County court Oct. 6.
