Car plows through restaurant patio, 5 injured

Police are expected to release more information today about a crash last night in which a driver plowed into a Warrenville restaurant. Five people were injured, two seriously, when the car went through a wrought-iron gate and an outdoor seating area. Charges are possible against the driver of the vehicle. One person was pinned between the vehicle and the restaurants exterior wall before the driver reversed into a parked car in the lot. Full story.

Man accidentally shoots himself during fight, police say

A 32-year-old California man is in custody today after police say he shot himself in the shoulder while beating up a victim in a popular McHenry park. The park was shut down for several hours yesterday after Armando J. Esqueda shot himself during the scuffle in the midst of a number of park patrons, said McHenry Police Deputy Chief Dan Kreassig. Cook County halts federal immigration holds

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart can ignore requests from the federal government to hold suspected illegal immigrants for an additional 48 hours in jail after they've either completed their sentence or bailed out ahead of trial. The county board voted 10-5 Wednesday to allow Dart's office to halt the practice of employing such holds on behalf of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office. Full story.

Mundelein eatery wins at national wing festival

Mundelein's Franks for the Memories restaurant claimed two prizes at this past weekend's National Buffalo Wing Festival. The popular eatery, which introduced Buffalo-style chicken wings to Lake County in the mid-1980s, won the Chairman's Award for Festival Spirit and placed third for its recipe in the traditional medium sauce competition. Suburban teenager stalked

Burt Constable reports today on how the start of school has meant the beginning of a stalking nightmare for a Lake County family. During the summer, the girl had a small circle of friends and a new development in her life -- her first boyfriend. After her parents put an end to the relationship, the windows on their house were broken and the teen received threatening texts. And it keeps escalating. Last week, the boy showed up at the girl's bus stop with a steak knife and box cutter. Full story.

Smoke and fire empty Elgin grocery store shelves

An Elgin grocery store remains shut down after a Wednesday afternoon fire filled the store with smoke and cut off electricity to refrigeration units causing more than $400,000 in damages. The store will need to restock a large portion of its goods after health department inspectors deemed much of the food unfit for consumption. The blaze is thought to have started on the roof, where repairs were under way. Full story.

Cops: Waukegan art teacher viewed child pornography at school

A Waukegan middle school art teacher has been charged after members of the school's ITY department discovered he was using a classroom computer to access child pornography websites, according to police. Joshua Rich, 53, of Libertyville was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of possession of child pornography. Full story.

Two suburban residents charged with Medicare fraud

A South Barrington physician and a Vernon Hills nursing home administrator have been indicated on charges of Medicare fraud on the heels of a nationwide federal crackdown that resulted in charges against 91 defendants across the country. The indictment states a South Barrington doctor prepared false reports claiming he performed medical procedures that did not take place and others claiming he performed more advanced operations than were actually performed. Traffic

Congestion on the area roadways has increased to major congestion throughout. The worst seems to be inbound I-55 through DuPage County where travel times are seriously stacked, specifically around I-355. Forte expected a contract extension before Sunday

Heading into the Bears opener vs. the Atlanta Falcons, running back Matt Forte finally voiced his disappointment and said he expected to have signed a contract extension before the first game. “I'm disappointed, kind of frustrated that it didn't get done. As a player, you're taught that this league is based off production, and you expect for a team to notice that and to get paid based off your production,” he said. Full story.

Peyton Manning's consecutive starts streak is over

As rumors float that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning might be out for the season, there is one thing that is definite — the streak is over. Manning will miss the Colt's opener Sunday, the first game he will sit out since Sept.. 6, 1998. He has started 227 consecutive games during the streak. Full story.
