Bartlett man charged in auto burglaries

A Bartlett man on parole for residential burglary admitted to police his involvement in several thefts from automobiles earlier this week, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Police charged Douglas Schwartz, 20, with burglary in connection with the auto break-ins that occurred Aug. 29 and 30 in the 1700 block of Glen Lake Road in Hoffman Estates.

A Cook County judge set Schwartz’s bail at $50,000 Wednesday. He must post 10 percent to be released from custody.

Schwartz, of the 1100 block of Buttercup Lane, told authorities he acted as a lookout while a juvenile accomplice entered the cars, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Bill Cotter. Schwartz also told authorities he intended to share in the proceeds, Cotter said.

Schwartz previously was sentenced to four years in prison after a 2010 felony residential burglary conviction. He also has prior convictions for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, retail theft and battery. In 2008, he was convicted of production of cannabis and sentenced to two years conditional discharge, Cotter said.

Schwartz next appears in court on Sept. 22.
