McHenry swim instructor sentenced to jail

A McHenry swim instructor was sentenced to 180 days in jail Tuesday for sexually abusing two students during swim lessons last year.

Rock J. Burman, 22, will serve 30 days of the 180 day sentence he was issued in jail immediately, officials said, and the remainder of his sentence will be forgiven if he successfully completes the terms of his two year probation.

Under the terms of his probation, Burman must register as a sex offender and is not allowed to have unsupervised contact with any minors.

Had he received the maximum sentence, Burman could have served up to seven years after he was convicted by a jury in March.

Authorities say Burman, who was 21 at the time, inappropriately touched two boys who were younger than 13 during a swimming lessons at the Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center in March 2010.

One of the boys told his father about the abuse immediately after a lesson, and an investigation led police to a second victim, according to the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s office.

Neither of the victims knew each other, but authorities said their accounts of the crimes were “almost identical.”
