Tollway crash victims identified as Elmhurst residents

Illinois State Police said Sunday that they continue to investigate a multiple-car crash on Interstate-88 near Lisle that killed two people and seriously injured two others.

The DuPage County coroner’s office has revealed that 74-year-old Sherali Shalwani and 37-year-old Farzana Ali, both of Elmhurst, were the fatalities in the crash, which happened Saturday evening between I-355 and Route 53, near the 130 mile marker.

The accident occurred when a 2006 Porsche started driving the wrong way on the westbound side of I-88 about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. The Porsche hit a 2004 Toyota sedan head-on.

Shalwani and Ali were passengers in the Toyota, police said. The driver of the Toyota, a 42-year-old man from Elmhurst, remains hospitalized in serious condition at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

The driver of the Porsche, a 43-year-old man from Naperville, remains hospitalized in critical condition at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Two other vehicles were involved in the crash, but no one in those vehicles was hurt, police said.
