Carol Stream police charge Schaumburg man with solicitation

A Schaumburg man has been charged with indecent solicitation of a child after he tried to meet with what he thought was a 14-year-old girl.

Instead, an undercover Carol Stream police detective posed as the girl in online conversations and ended up arresting him when he arrived for an in-person meeting.

Roberto R. Rodriguez, 35, also has been charged with traveling to meet a minor and attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse — all felonies.

Carol Stream Cmdr. Ken George said Rodriguez responded to a Craigslist posting set up by the detective, posing as the 14-year-old girl. Following an online conversation on July 14, Rodriguez was met by officers the next day at Gary Avenue and Elk Trail, where he arranged to meet for “sexual favors,” officials said.

George said two Carol Stream detectives trained through the Illinois Internet Crimes Against Children task force work such cases.

“This guy was pretty adamant for doing it right away,” George said. “Sometimes it takes weeks. This guy was right up front and said what he wanted.”

George said Rodriguez does not have a history of committing sex crimes.

When Rodriguez arrived in Carol Stream, he was taken into custody by authorities. He was transported to DuPage County jail, and his bond has been set at $150,000, of which he must post 10 percent to be released.
