Elgin man charged with sexual assault

Police charged an Elgin man with criminal sexual assault, home invasion and residential burglary in a case involving a woman attacked Thursday in her Schaumburg home.

A Cook County judge set bail at $100,000 Friday for Charles Craddock, of the 1300 block of Maroon Drive. Authorities say Craddock broke into the woman’s home at about 2 a.m. Thursday and entered the bedroom where she was sleeping, The man then assaulted her and fled with her cellphone, which he later discarded, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Caroline Kennedy.

Police say this was not a random attack and that the woman knew the defendant. There are currently two orders of protection out against Craddock from other individuals.

Craddock’s criminal background includes a conviction for manufacture and delivery of cannabis in 1994 and a conviction for violation of an order of protection in 1996. The judge denied prosecutors’ request for GPS monitoring, but did impose special conditions if the defendant should make bond. Those conditions prohibit Craddock from contacting the complaining witness and her family. The judge also ordered the defendant to stay away from the woman’s work and residence.

If convicted, Craddock could face between six and 30 years in prison. He next appears in a Rolling Meadows courtroom on June 9.
