text size: AAA

Two men were in court Saturday on charges of selling counterfeit DVDs outside a Hanover Park discount store.

Philemon Moody, 52, and Harry Stratam, 53, are charged with unlawful use of copywritten materials, a class 4 felony punishable by one to three years in prison. Probation is also an option.

Police received a call just before 7 p.m. Friday about suspicious men outside a store on South Barrington Road, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Robin Murphy. After observing the defendants approach patrons as they entered and exited the discount store, one of the undercover officers approached the men and asked what they were doing. They responded that they were selling DVDs for $5, Murphy said.

Cook County Court Judge Jill Cerone Marisie set bail at $3,000 Saturday for Moody, of the 100 block of Pickwick Drive in Schaumburg. She set bail at $10,000 for Stratam, of the 200 block of W. Kennedy Drive in Streamwood. Stratam’s criminal background includes four convictions for theft dating back to 1995 and an armed robbery conviction from 1980, said Murphy.

Moody’s background includes several convictions for theft and burglary, Murphy said.

Both men next appear in court on March 21.
