On Saturday, Jan. 22, Walter R. Sundling Junior High’s Jazz Band participated in the 34th Annual Northshore Jazz Festival at Glenbrook South High School in Glenview.

The competition showcases junior high and high school jazz ensembles and combos. First, second, and third places are awarded in each division, as well as awards to outstanding soloists and a grand champion.

The WRS Jazz Band, which is led by Jeff Zilke, Sundling’s band director, was awarded a superior rating and received an overall ranking of third place out of the 18 junior high bands that participated. Also, Ryan Schlaiss, an eighth-grade baritone saxophone player, was awarded an outstanding soloist award at the festival.

The WRS Jazz Band has competed at the North Shore Jazz Festival since 2001, receiving superior ratings each year. It has finished in the top three each year since 2005.

The WRS Jazz Band is an extracurricular group that rehearses before school twice a week. The 21 students who comprise the WRS Jazz Band were chosen by audition from among the 120 seventh- and eighth-grade students enrolled in the school’s band program.
