Man in custody in St. Charles home invasion case

An Elburn man wanted on charges of home invasion and attempted murder of an ex-girlfriend has turned himself in, police said Thursday.

Mario M. Bocanegra, 29, was taken into custody late Wednesday at the St. Charles Police Department. He appeared in Kane County bond court Thursday, where stipulations were added to his $250,000 bail, previously set when an arrest warrant was issued.

Kane County Associate Judge James Hallock added several conditions, including that Bocanegra stay at least 500 feet away from the home and workplace of the victim, and that he wear a GPS device that will notify police if he violates the conditions.

When asked if his Beith Road address was current or if he had another, Bocanegra told Hallock “I don't have an address. I was living with the victim.”

On Dec. 17, St. Charles police were called to a report of a man trying to force his way into an apartment in the 100 block of North 13th Avenue. The first officer to arrive heard a woman and a child screaming, according to police reports.

Police say Bocanegra forced his way into the apartment of a former girlfriend, threatened to kill her, threw her to the ground, hit her with his fists, grabbed her hair and slammed her head into the floor, all in the presence of her 2-year-old son. He ran off as police arrived.

Police say Bocanegra has abused and threatened the woman in the past. He was out on bond after being charged in DuPage County with domestic battery causing great bodily harm, in a case out of Bartlett Oct. 11, 2010. He is due to appear in DuPage court Feb. 2. One of the conditions of bond in the Bartlett case was that he have no contact with the victim.

In Kane County, Bocanegra faces charges of attempted murder, home invasion, unlawful restraint and intimidation of a witness.

His next court date in Kane County is Feb. 4.
