Rolling Meadows nets Sky honor

Enjoying its one of its best starts in school history, things got even better for the Rolling Meadows girls basketball team on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mustangs were named the WNBA Chicago Sky's “High School Girls Team of the Week” for Dec. 14.

Coach Todd Hatfield's squad, currently tied for first place in the Mid-Suburban East with Hersey, is being recognized for its excellence on and off the basketball court.

The 9-1 Mustangs snapped a 49-game losing streak in the MSL East when it started the conference season with wins over Prospect and Buffalo Grove.

Meadows also won the Mundelein Thanksgiving tournament with 5-0 record and is currently 1-0 in the Mundelein Christmas tournament.

The Mustangs also posted a win over highly-regarded MSL West co-leader Fremd (9-2).

Off the court, the girls' efforts have been just impressive.

Each season, the Meadows players visit two local elementary schools and read to students in kindergarten through third grade.

This year, they are going to Westgate Elementary and Kimball Hill Elementary schools.

The players, accompanied by the school mascot and in uniform, promote reading and healthy life choices including exercise, eating healthy and avoiding drugs.

The Rolling Meadows girls basketball team will be provided a complimentary “Team Night Out” ticket package to a 2011 Sky regular-season home game at Allstate Arena.

They will have the opportunity meet and talk to Sky players and coaches before the game and be honored on the Sky court during the game.

Rolling Meadows will also have the Sky experience brought to one of its home games.

The Sky is recognizing one high school girls basketball team each week throughout the 2010-11 basketball season.

It is now accepting nominations from parents, coaches, faculty members and players.

Nomination forms can be accessed and submitted at www.chicagosky.net or can be requested by mail.

Forms should be mailed to Chicago Sky, Attn: Community Relations, 20 W. Kinzie, Suite 1010, Chicago, IL 60654 or faxed to the Sky office at 312.828.9979.
