Dist. 203, foundation 'clearly define' relationship

For 18 years Naperville Unit District 203 and the nonprofit Naperville Education Foundation have run parallel courses, but they've never had a formal agreement outlining the relationship.

District board members changed that Monday night when they approved a highly detailed memorandum of understanding that spells out each participant's role.

“This seems to be very well-written,” board member Dave Weeks said. “It's a very thoughtful and dynamic document. It allows for growth.”

Incorporated in 1992, the foundation serves as a vehicle for obtaining dollars to support educational initiatives not funded by regular revenue sources such as property taxes. Money primarily comes from donations, memorials, grants and fundraising efforts.

According to its website, the foundation aims to “encourage creativity, innovation and excellence in our students” by providing opportunities such as Kid Boosters Grants for students in need and funding Study Skills Academies at all 21 schools.

Superintendent Mark Mitrovich, who serves as one of seven members on the foundation board, said the agreement approved Monday will provide structure to an already stable relationship.

Despite the newly formalized relationship, the document also emphasizes the separation of both groups even prohibiting the foundation from reprinting the district logo when referencing projects within the district.

The foundation also works with groups outside the district, including administering the independently established Jeanine Nicarico Memorial Fund for Literacy.

“They do great work,” Weeks said. “It was just time to more clearly define the relationship.”
