“Is that you, Pat?” manager asks alleged robber

Police say Patrick Callaghan went to great lengths to hide his identity when he tried to rob his former boss; he wore a helmet, a mask and a bandanna over his face.

But authorities say he forgot one thing: his voice.

Callaghan, 25, of Oak Brook, was indicted Thursday on felony charges stemming from the failed armed robbery at Jimmy John's, 2321 Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove.

Police said Callaghan hadn't worked for the sandwich shop in more than a year when, shortly after 4 p.m. on Oct. 29, he entered through an open back door wielding a pocket knife and a BB gun and ordered his former boss to open the safe.

Despite Callaghan's disguise, police said, the manager immediately recognized the intruder's voice, and asked: “Is that you, Pat?”

Downers Grove Sgt. David Bormann said Callaghan fled without any money after the manager pulled a fire alarm. No one was seriously hurt, he said, although the manager reported being elbowed and kneed in the side several times during the incident.

Bormann said Callaghan was questioned and later arrested after the manager identified him to police as a possible suspect. He remained in the DuPage County jail Friday with bond set at $100,000.

His arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 22 in Wheaton.
