Elgin man gets prison for 5th DUI

An Elgin man was sentenced Thursday to 4½ years in prison for his fifth DUI.

Juan J. Santana, 37, of the 200 block of Illinois Avenue, pleaded guilty to one count each of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on a revoked license in exchange for the sentence. Kane County Associate Judge Allen M. Anderson accepted the negotiated plea.

Santana was arrested about 12:55 a.m. July 17 after East Dundee police found him parked in the middle of the road at South River Street and Maiden Lane. Police said he accelerated his 2005 Nissan Altima when an officer approached with flashing lights, then drove over a curb and onto private property.

Prosecutors said Thursday that it was his fifth DUI.

He was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of 54 months and one year for the DUI and revoked license charges, respectively. By law, prosecutors said, he must serve at least half of the 4½-year term, with credit for 42 days already served in the county jail.

According to court records, Santana also has prior convictions for speeding, forgery and endangering the life or health of a child.
