Sugar Grove men face charges in cemetery beating

Two Sugar Grove men charged in connection with a fistfight at a cemetery near Maple Park surrendered to police Thursday.

John F. Karas, 21, of the 1800 block of Fays Lane, and Alexander S. Wagner, 21, of the 1900 block of Annette Circle, are each charged with aggravated battery and mob action.

Kane County Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said the two suspects beat up a 21-year-old Elburn man they knew about 6:30 p.m. Monday at Gardner Cemetery, on the 49W500 block of Route 38, southeast of Maple Park. As the fight was taking place, a 30-year-old man who lives nearby tried to intervene and also was attacked, Gengler said.

Police said neither victim was hospitalized, and no weapons were used.

Gengler said Karas and Wagner turned themselves in separately Thursday afternoon and were each released after posting $1,000 in bond money.
