Grandparents upset about bus situation

We read with great interest the letter from Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hendricks of Palatine on Jan. 4.

We also had a similar problem with Mr. Walter Doughty, director of transportation for District 15. Our 4-year-old granddaughter attends John Conyers Academy in Rolling Meadows for students with disabilities.

Last year she was picked up and dropped off at the door of her Brookwood complex. This year it was changed to have her picked up at Frontage Road.

This is totally unacceptable for a 4-year-old. She is the only student picked up at those times and they simply would have to turn into the complex from Kirchoff Road, driving through the complex to her front door and then going on to Frontage Road and would not take any extra time just as they did last year.

Our granddaughter has asthma and bronchitis problems and is on medication and this would not be very good for her standing in the weather elements. She has already missed eight days of school so far this year.

We tried to explain this to Mr. Doughty and Mr. Garwood, the board president, but to no avail. Mr. Doughty won't even try to understand the situation. He just says he will not change it and that's that!

We also went to the board meeting in September where there were many other people upset with the bus situation. Maybe if she gets sick and enters the hospital as happened when she was 2 years old, then he'll start to listen. We doubt it! I guess it's time to contact Pam Zekman of CBS News!

I hope Dr. Lukich, the superintendent of schools gets to read our letter as well as Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks.
