    Wheaton walks aims to stamp out Huntington’s disease

    Dave and Susie Hodgson each lost a spouse to Huntington’s disease. Now married to each other, the Sandwich couple organizes the TEAM HOPE-Walk for a Cure to benefit the Illinois chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.

    Dave and Susie Hodgson know the stats as well as anyone: Huntingtons disease usually strikes adults in their 30s or 40s; one in 10,000 Americans has Huntingtons; none will survive. But what the Sandwich couple knows better than most is what those stats mean in the everyday life of a Huntingtons sufferer and his or her family. Dave and Susie each lost a spouse to Huntingtons.

    World War II Navy veteran and longtime Roselle resident Ed Obrochta will soon be joining 95 other veterans on a once in a lifetime trip. On Wednesday, May 23, Obrochta will be flying to Washington, D.C., to visit the Worl War II Memorial and tour other sites of interest in our nations capital.

    Who says you can't get into show business at a young age? Fifth-graders from Harrison Street School in Geneva recently performed "Twinderella," a version of "Cinderella." The 42 students were involved with all aspects of the stage experience, including lights, sound and sets, as well as acting, singing and dancing.

    Second-graders in Rachel Boehm's class at Hawthorn Elementary School North in Vernon Hills asked, "Why are ladybugs called ladies if they are aren't ladies?" These beautiful hard-coated insects, typically red with black spots, are an important part of our ecosystem. There are male ladybugs and female ladybugs. Most likely the name is an Old English reference to the Virgin Mary, who was depicted in early paintings wearing a red cloak.

    In this season of election year politicking and budget-cutting, Candace King, executive director of the DuPage Federation on Human Services Reform, has a message she hopes elected officials and the general public can hear. "Our community would be a lot better off if we invested in supports for vulnerable populations," she said. "There are hungry children and I dont think we should have hungry children in DuPage County."
