    South Elgin could just as easily have stayed down for the count after taking St. Edward’s best shot in the opening minutes of Tuesday’s nonconference girls basketball game. Instead after falling behind 9-0 on the road the Storm got up off the canvass, dusted themselves off, and battled their way to a 64-56 win.

    South Elgin’s boys basketball team did everything it could to slow down Lakes’ Ethan Sage on Friday, but in the end there was just no stopping the 6-foot-3 senior forward. Sage lit it up for 38 points and also had 9 rebounds. His free throw with 23 seconds left in overtime was the go-ahead point in the Eagles’ 72-71 win in the Consolation B semifinals of the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs.

    Cary-Grove 44, Mundelein 27: Katie Barker became the eighth player in C-G girls basketball history to score 1,000 career points in the Trojans’ (7-8) win at the Mundelein Holiday Tournament. Barker led all scorers with 16 points.

    Cary-Grove senior Justin Blair has been in a bit of a slump lately, but it was hard to tell by the way he lit up the scoreboard in the fourth quarter on Tuesday in the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs. Blair scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the final quarter to rally the Trojans back from a 9-point deficit to a 41-39 win over South Elgin in third round pool play action. Blair hit a pair of free throws with 39 seconds for the final go-ahead points.

After losing by 22 points to Barrington in the opening round of the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs on Saturday, the Storm bounced back with a strong start against Johnsburg and then held on for a 56-49 victory. Matt Smith led South Elgin with 16 points. Justin Howard added 11.

Ivanauskas gave the Storm a taste of what Barrington’s big man can do in a 65-43 Broncos win to open up pool play at the 2014 Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs.

    Metea Valley center Mark Konkle expected to see South Elgin’s 6-foot 10 center Tyler Hankins crowding him around the glass in the Mustangs’ 83-51 Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division boys basketball blowout of the Storm in South Elgin Friday night. Instead, with Hankins in street clothes until the end of January due to injury and Konkle’s 6-foot-6 frame giving the senior a 4-inch height advantage against his defenders, the cup was free and the game plan was to get the ball inside to the 235-pounder and the rest would take care of itself.

The host Storm were whistled for nine fouls in the game’s first 8 minutes, and it appeared at that time as if it might be a long day for the home team. But South Elgin was able to adjust its defense enough to satisfy the officials, and the Storm was able to notch a 56-51 come-from-behind Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division win.
