    Tri-county 4-H’ers earned 34 Superior Honors and 60 Awards of Excellence at the Illinois State Fair junior exhibit judging in Springfield in August. Nearly 100 DuPage, Kane and Kendall County youth shared their qualifying 4-H projects with judges on Aug. 9. The Award of Excellence is given to youth whose county project earned them a trip to the Illinois State Fair.

    In August, more than 1,000 supporters watched the induction of 66 new members into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame, including three representatives of the tri-county area of DuPage, Kane and Kendall Counties. Area winners include: Laura Bennett, DuPage County; Carol McKellar, Kane County; and Mary Ann Petersen, Kendall County.

     
  • Tri-Cities police reports Sep 17, 2014 6:23 PM
    Emmanuel Rivera, 25, of the 39W500 block of Prairie Street, Aurora, was charged with driving under the influence and DUI with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or more at 12:49 a.m. Sunday on the 39W500 block of Prairie Street, according to a sheriff’s report. A breath test registered a .134 BAC, the report said.

    One in three Americans is now a stepparent, a stepchild, a step sibling, or member of a blended family. That’s a big change from the ‘Leave it to Beaver’ days. The fact is; the traditional nuclear family (families where both parents are married and live together) is on the decline, from 45 percent of households in 1960 to 23 percent this year. Sept. 16 is National Step Family Day, which raises awareness for this growing demographic of families.

    A resident on the 300 block of North Lincolnway Road near North Aurora reported at 9 a.m. Sept. 2 that someone in Indianapolis made an unauthorized withdrawal from the resident’s bank account of $3,900, according to a sheriff’s report. The transaction was conducted with a forged driver’s license and a credit card, the report said.

    Culver's of St. Charles will host a "Day of Giving" and marrow registry drive to honor six-year-old Ava Lee. The event will honor a local 6-year-old with leukemia. Culver’s will donate 10 percent of its receipts to Be the Match, a national bone marrow registry. According to Be the Match, ethnicity plays a big role in bone-marrow matches. Because Ava is of Taiwanese and Korean descent, her match most likely will be with someone who shares her similar ethnicity. Although only seven percent of the current, national registry of potential marrow donors are Asian, Lee's parents are hopeful that this Culver’s drive will reveal the "needle in the haystack" they desperately seek.
