Zion-Benton (17-5, 7-3) opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter and never looked back in an impressive 68-41 romp over Lake Zurich.

  • Everything but the outcome suits Warren Jan 25, 2013 11:08 PM
After coming tantalizingly close to upsetting the North Suburban Lake Division champion Zee-Bees on Friday night in Zion, Warren's girls basketball team took an upbeat approach to a 60-58 loss that would not have occurred had the Blue Devils been able to handle Zion's full-court pressure and make their free throws.

  • Morrisseyís key 3s help power Stevenson Jan 18, 2013 11:16 PM
Stevenson sophomore Jalen Brunson has hit his share of big shots in just a little more than a season on the Patriots basketball team. But on Friday night, Brunson was more than happy admiring the big 3-pointers that came from teammate Matt Morrissey. Morrissey struck early, burying a pair 3-pointers during a 12-0 run to open a key North Suburban Conference Lake Division contest with visiting Zion-Benton. But his long arching 3-pointer on a feed from teammate Andy Stempel that Morrissey called "a champion's pass," fired up Brunson and the rest of the Patriot teammates. Though he finished with just 9 points, all of them counted in a 66-56 win for Stevenson over Zion on Friday night. The win lifts the Patriots to a first-place tie with Zion-Benton in the NSC Lake at 5-2. Stevenson is 13-4 overall and Zion is 14-4.

  • Yarbrough powers Zion-Benton past Lakes Jan 12, 2013 11:13 PM
Putting together a 20-1 run against a team as solid as Zion-Benton is not an easy task, but thatís what Lakes was able to do Saturday night in Lake Villa. Beginning midway through the second quarter and continuing for the first 2Ĺ minutes of the third, the run enabled the Eagles to go up 35-27 in the North Suburban Conference crossover game. Trying to maintain that lead and prevail over the Zee-Bees proved to be a more difficult assignment for Lakes. Zion rallied from a 9-point deficit and hung on down the stretch to earn a 56-53 victory. Junior Milik Yarbrough scored 18 of Zionís 22 fourth-quarter points and wound up with a game-high 30, while senior guard Gabriel Ramirez knocked down a quartet of 3-pointers for his 12 points in the Zee-Beesí fifth consecutive triumph.

  • Zion-Benton stops Stevenson, takes command in NSC Lake Dec 22, 2012 7:23 PM
It was a somber group of Stevenson players who exited the locker room Saturday afternoon. Determined to make amends for a 20-point loss to Zion-Benton on Nov. 29 and hopeful of extending their winning streak to 10 games, the Patriots outplayed the Zee-Bees in every facet of the game while fashioning a 21-16 halftime advantage. But while Zion righted its ship in the second half of the North Suburban Lake Division contest, Stevenson went adrift. The result was a 48-35 victory for the host Zee-Bees (11-2, 7-0), who now hold a 2-game division lead over the Patriots (9-5, 5-2).

  • Emotional win for Mundelein Dec 21, 2012 11:14 PM
Dedicating the game to longtime scorekeeper Jim Ackley, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 82, Mundelein started strong and never looked back in an 84-64 dismantling of host Zion-Benton Friday night. The Mustangs (6-4, 4-1) wore warm-up jerseys recognizing Ackley for his 50 years of service, then honored him with a performance that would have kept the popular scorekeeper busy all night. All five of Mundelein's senior starters scored in double figures in the North Suburban Lake Division contest.

  • Too much Yarbrough as Zion-Benton stops Warren Dec 15, 2012 9:45 PM
When a guy can nail his 3-pointers, run the court and slam dunk on fastbreaks and swat away shots in the lane, he's a difficult force with which to contend. Milik Yarbrough is that type of player, as he proved again Saturday night. The 6-foot-6 junior forward did all that and more, leading Zion-Benton to a 53-44 victory at Warren in a North Suburban Lake Division game. It marked the fifth win in a row for the Zee-Bees (9-1, 5-0), who used an up-tempo offense and a stifling defense to thwart the Blue Devils (6-5, 2-3).

  • Endgame favors Zion-Benton Nov 30, 2012 11:08 PM
It was the best of comebacks for Zion-Benton. It was the most disappointing of finishes for Stevenson. This tale of two shots — the one that fell for the Zee-Bees with eight seconds remaining, and the one that failed to drop for the Patriots in the final second — ended with host Zion-Benton squeezing out a 56-55 win Friday night in the North Suburban Conference Lake Division opener for both teams. And it left Patriots fans trying like the dickens to figure out how it slipped away.

  • Zee-Beesí threes donít please Stevenson Nov 29, 2012 11:25 PM
Here's a major reason for the latest Stevenson defeat. It goes down as a Zee-Bee Three-Bee. A Zee-Bee Three-Bee? That's simply a rain of 3-point shots from the visiting Zion-Benton Zee Bees. Winless Stevenson (0-4) was just 6 points down midway through the third quarter Thursday night in Lincolnshire. And then the 4-1 Zee-Bees turned it up and posted a decisive 67-47 NSC Lake Division victory.

  • Stevenson tops Z-B for share of NSC Lake title Oct 20, 2012 12:22 AM
Stevenson 28, Zion-Benton 14: The visiting Patriots survived a scare, overcoming a 7-0 halftime deficit to beat the Zee-Bees and secure a share of the North Suburban Conference Lake Division championship with Lake Zurich. Willie Bourbonís 9-yard touchdown pass to Matt Morrissey on the first series of the second half finally got Stevenson (7-2, 5-1) on the scoreboard. On Zion-Bentonís next possession, a bad snap on a punt attempt set the Patriots up with good field position. Bourbon then threw a 17-yard TD pass to Alan Velev. Zion-Benton (2-7, 1-5) answered to tie the score at 14-14 late in the third quarter. But Anthony Bozinís 14-yard touchdown run gave Stevenson the lead for good. Bourbon ran into the end zone from 7 yards out to complete the scoring.

"I think it's a brilliant way to use social media. ... It's the most peaceful way," said a mother of three.

  • Choi soaks up belated victory Aug 29, 2012 10:50 PM
A downpour wiped out the Lake County boys golf tournament at Antioch Golf Club last week. In a makeup of the tourney Wednesday, Grayslake Central senior Dan Choi reigned. Choiís 73 was good for a two-stroke victory over Lake Forestís Drew Barrett at Antioch GC. Barrett (75), Ian Mankoff (76, third), Graham Ganshirt (77, fourth) and Drew Takacs (77, fifth) led Lake Forest to a winning total of 305. Antioch also got strong rounds from Briley Schultz (79, 10th), Kyle Thode (82, 13th) and Dillon Kreutzer (82, 14th). • Barrington rises past Zion-Benton May 29, 2012 9:36 PM
Taylor Ganzer needed to take Barrington just a little higher. The Broncos setter recognized that Zion-Benton was crowding the net in Tuesday's sectional final in Barrington. Ganzer then began to set the ball higher, over the Zee Bee defenders for some clean kills as the Broncos swept past Zion-Benton 25-17, 25-20. Barrington (33-6) will be making its first appearance at the state finals since 2005, when the Broncos finished second. Barrington will meet Lake Park in a state quarterfinal match at 6 p.m. Friday at Hoffman Estates High School.

  • Zion-Benton eliminates Stevenson May 25, 2012 10:26 PM
At the Barrington boys volleyball sectional, Stevenson ran smack dab into what some are saying is a team of destiny. Or maybe it's simply a talented, motivated swarm of Zee-Bees. But whatever you want to name them, there's one thing you can for certain call No. 6 seed Zion-Benton: Sectional finalists. Despite overcoming an almost insurmountable deficit in the second game, the Patriots fell 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 to the Zee-Bees in Friday's semifinals. Zion-Benton (29-8), led by the solid hitting of 6-foot-5 senior right side Josh Hieb (10 kills), moves on to play Barrington at 7 p.m. Tuesday night for the right to advance to next weekend's state finals.
