Focus on school safety at Gurnee districts 56 and 50 Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Safety and security are at the forefront at two Gurnee school districts this week. Nationally known school security expert Kenneth Trump was scheduled to examine buildings at Woodland Elementary District 50 on Monday and Tuesday. Trump will do a security audit at Gurnee Elementary District 56 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ancient Egyptians used pulley system to build pyramids Dec 18, 2012 12:00 AM
A student in Gregg Thompson's sixth-grade social studies class at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee asked, "How did the Ancient Egyptians carry blocks that were 1,000 times their weight to build pyramids?" The answer is a complex pulley and sled system that was created to move the blocks hundreds of miles.

Fired principal still fighting Grayslake charter school in courtDec 9, 2012 12:00 AM
Brian Greene is continuing his legal fight with Prairie Crossing Charter School in Grayslake, where he was the focus of public meetings about a year ago before he was fired. The next hearing for his lawsuit against the school is set for Tuesday. “I remain confident that the truth in what occurred there will be revealed, and my name and credibility can be restored,” Greene said.

Prairie Crossing Charter School's boss has announced he's departing at the end of the current academic year. Nigel Whittington made his resignation public in an email to the Grayslake public choice school's parents and others Monday. He's been executive director since July 2010.

Woodland Primary School's library will welcome children's book author and illustrator Melissa Iwai and author Denis Markell on Monday, Nov. 19. The school is at 17366 W. Gages Lake Road, Gages Lake. Iwai, a returning guest to the primary school, will present her latest book, "Hush Little Monster," to the school's Early Childhood students. "Hush Little Monster," which she illustrated, was written by Markell, who's also her husband.
