Woodland Dist. 50 bus driver accused of molesting teen May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
A Woodland Elementary District 50 bus driver has been charged with molesting a teenage girl who isn't a student at Gurnee-based school system, authorities said. Kristin Miks, 32, of the 33000 block of Sunset Avenue in unincorporated Wildwood, faces two counts of criminal sexual assault and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Lake County sheriff's police Sgt. Sara Balmes announced Wednesday. Miks was freed after posting 10 percent of a $150,000 bond.

Gurnee-based Woodland Elementary District 50 officials plan to continue calling attention to what they say is an unfair method of how state-approved charter schools are formed. District 50 officials have voiced concern about having to send state general aide to help pay for children attending Prairie Crossing Charter School in Grayslake, which amounts to about $3 million for the current academic year.

Two former Negro league ballplayers entertained fifth-graders at Gurnee's Woodland Intermediate School on Wednesday with stories about their careers in professional baseball. Hank Presswood, a 91-year-old ex-shortstop who now lives in Chicago, and Ray Knox, an 81-year-old Evanston resident who was a catcher in his playing days, even talked about meeting the great Leroy Satchel Paige.

Gurnee police are offering a glimpse of a safety training video featuring local officers, students and teachers reacting to a lockdown at the village’s Woodland Middle School. Police and Woodland Elementary District 50 collaborated in the production at the school two weeks ago. It’s geared for school employees who didn’t receive formal training about lockdown procedures because they were hired in the middle of an academic year.

New contract for District 50 teachers, support staff Feb 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Teachers and support staff now officially have a new contract at Woodland Elementary District 50 in Gurnee. District 50 board members approved the deal at a meeting Tuesday night. Members of the Woodland branch of the Lake County Federation of Teachers union ratified the contract in late December.
