    A new combination of golf and soccer -- called FootGolf -- is popping up at suburban golf courses as managers look to get more use of their facilities and attract new players. “It follows 99 percent of the rules of golf but instead of having a club and a little ball and many struggles, it’s just kicking the ball forward and aiming toward a 21-inch cup,” said Carols Stremi, founder of the Illinois FootGolf Association.

Three board seats, which each serve four-year terms, are available. Any individual who is a registered voter and is a resident of the Wheeling Park District is eligible to hold the office of commissioner of the Wheeling Park District.

    Wheeling postponed re-establishing two tax increment financing districts Monday, which also postponed any lawsuit from school districts and the library and park districts that serve the community. The village board must wait for Cook County’s certified equalized assessed valuation for the areas within the districts, said Village Manager Jon Sfondilis. He said after the meeting that officials are willing to answer questions raised by the other boards.

    Beer sales at adult sporting events in Wheeling’s Heritage Park could still be on tap as the village board postponed a vote Monday on the park district’s request to allow it. Village President Dean Argiris, who last month voted against a liquor license for the facility, kept the issue alive Monday by suggesting park officials return with more information at the May 5 board meeting.

Earth Day craft activities for children also will be offered.

    Responding to protests from residents, the Wheeling village board Monday rejected a request from the Wheeling Park District to sell beer at an upcoming event in the rebuilt Heritage Park. The village board voted 4-3 against granting a liquor license for the sale of beer at an adult softball tournament planned for the park April 4-6.

    Wheeling is willing to share excess funds from Tax Increment Financing districts with schools, libraries and parks boards, but will not sign a proposed agreement requiring them to do so, Village President Dean Argiris said. “We will distribute any surplus as we have in the past because it’s the right thing to do,” Argiris said, “but don’t hold a gun to my head.”

     
  • Wheeling sharing TIF surplus with school districts Mar 5, 2014 10:19 AM
    Wheeling has declared a surplus in its South Milwaukee Tax Increment Financing district, which means one-time payments totaling $2.5 million will go to local governments. Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 will receive $1.1 million; Northwest Suburban High School District 214 will get $562,369; and the village of Wheeling will get $275,375.

    School district representatives and Wheeling residents who may be impacted by the village's plans to re-establish a pair of Tax Increment Finance districts aired their concerns Tuesday at a public hearing. Their concerns ranged from lost revenues for schools, libraries and parks to fears the village would use the TIF as a means of condemning older homes.
