    The heat wave of early summer is gone, the dangerous drought conditions are easing, and now residents of Wheaton and Carol Stream can finally have some overdue fun. Both communities rescheduled their Independence Day celebrations in July due to the extreme weather conditions. And both will take advantage of the Labor Day holiday to celebrate the Fourth of July in early September.

    Wheaton officials continue to push for enhancements to development plans for the former Hubble Middle School site, but an attorney for the owner cautioned some of the proposed changes could adversely impact the project's economic viability. In the second public hearing on the project Monday, the city council discussed sidewalk construction, road improvements and outdoor lighting at the site.

    The long-running search for a buyer to take over the vacant Jewel site in downtown Wheaton may be coming to an end. Mayor Michael Gresk says a contract is pending for the sale of the former grocery store at 114 E. Willow Ave. The prospective developer envisions tearing down the 20,000-square-foot structure and constructing a medical office building, Gresk said.

The grand opening is from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the museum, 102 E. Wesley St., Wheaton. The exhibit, which runs through April 30, will feature uniforms, photos and artifacts.

Now, they must decide: take the money and find additional money in the budget for expected renovations or say "No" and possibly hinder future grant applications.
