Burton heats up in Mundelein win May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
To get a spot on the Cal-Irvine men's volleyball team next year, Mundelein senior Blake Burton will have to be ready from the word "go." He might not get the kind of "warm-up time" he got on Wednesday in leading the Mustangs to a 19-25, 25-21, 25-20 come-from-behind North Suburban Conference victory over host Lake Zurich.

Mundelein repeats as NSC champs May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
There are plaques in the shape of baseballs, as well as the state of Illinois, plastered all over the press box at Mundelein. They commemorate just about everything: trips downstate, regional championships, conference championships and 20-win seasons. Now something new will be added to the press box, thanks to the events of Thursday afternoon. Surprisingly, the perennial power Mustangs had never before won baseball conference titles in back-to-back seasons. But they checked that off the list with their 5-1 win over visiting Wauconda in the North Suburban Conference title game.

He's been Wauconda's mayor for less than two weeks, and Frank Bart already has had to deal with a harsh critic. "While attempting to put my 4-year-old to bed, I stood in his bedroom doorway blocking his way to the playroom. Frustrated, he exclaimed, I don't like the new mayor,'" Bart explained. In a wide-ranging Q&A, Bart talks about his first days as mayor, his goals for the village and what he loves about Wauconda.

Stevenson’s a hit against Mundelein May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Despite 3 errors, Stevenson was able to roll by North Suburban Conference Lake Division champion Mundelein 7-1 Tuesday. A steady stream of hits helped. The Patriots tallied 9 hits, thanks to a 3-for-3 effort out of Jimmy Marchese, who got one of his hits to go for a double. Zach Novoselsky drove in 2 runs while going 3-for-4 and Eli Greenspon also finished with 2 RBI. Pitcher Mitchell Goll got the win for Stevenson, which improves to 17-10. He gave up only 1 walk over six innings.

Sign of the times at Wauconda: 12-0 May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
As soon as Wauconda's baseball team finished its undefeated run through the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division, Bulldogs unfurled a splashy, colored banner, compliments of a generous parent. Included on the banner was Wauconda's NSC Prairie record: "12-0" Mind you, the sign was made in the morning — before the Bulldogs' 13-6 win over visiting Antioch on Tuesday. So if Antioch had beaten Wauconda, what would have become of the banner, which would have the Bulldogs' record incorrect? "I don't know," Wauconda coach Bill Sliker said with a laugh. "I guess I would have put it in the basement." Moot point now.

Victory wears well on Phillips, Antioch May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Bound for Ball State University, where she plans to study fashion merchandising, Antioch senior pitcher Katie Phillips was styling Tuesday. Never mind that she was wearing her softball uniform and sweating under the season's hottest sun. "I like clothes," a smiling Phillips said. While pitching Antioch to a 5-1 win over host Wauconda in the teams' North Suburban Conference Prairie Division finale, Phillips dusted off her old outfielder skills.

Slot Mundelein as NSC Lake champs May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
On Monday in Lincolnshire, Mundelein's Mitch Schulewitz was handed the ball to secure a Lake Division title for the Mustangs. And the UIC-bound right-hander was brilliant, stopping Stevenson on three singles. He needed to be that good. That's because his mound opponent, Iowa-bound Matt Allen, was almost as sharp. Allen at least can tell a story about how his team committed 4 errors in the first inning yet allowed just one runner to score. Mundelein (24-3) clinched North Suburban Conference Lake Division title with a 3-0 win.
