    With one inning of offensive brilliance, Naperville North’s baseball team erased four games of frustration. The Huskies scored 12 runs in their first trip to the plate and rolled to a 21-8 five-inning win over Waubonsie Valley in Wednesday’s nonconference matchup in Aurora.

    Glenbard North 5, Conant 1: Kyle Crites improved to 3-0 with 5 strong innings on the mound for the Panthers (4-2). Glenbard North drove in 5 two-out runs. Benet 5, Naperville North 3: The Redwings (3-2) rallied to the nonconference victory by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Naperville North fell to 1-2. Downers South 5-9, Addison Trail 0-3: Danny Spinnuza’s 1-hitter over 6 innings in the opener sparked the Mustangs (3-1, 2-0) to the West Suburban Gold sweep. Matt Zinnecker got the save and drove in 2 runs in Game 2. Joe Amato went 2-for-3 in the second game for Addison Trail (1-4, 0-2). Notre Dame 7-7, Lake Park 2-9: Game 2 winning pitcher Anthony Gallina went 2-for-3 in the victory with a double and 2 RBI for Lake Park (2-2). Kenny Schutz and Devin Rybacki each went 3-for-5 while Brandon Popp drove in 3 runs. Steve Joyce picked up the save. Willowbrook 29-16, Proviso East 0-0: Tyler Zunkel and Mike Rothmund drove in 4 runs apiece in the opener of the West Suburban Gold sweep by the Warriors (3-1, 2-0). Luke Schuemer had 3 hits and 3 RBI in the second game while Rothmund homered. T.J. Case and Jake Cady were the winning pitchers. Oak Park 6-2, York 1-8: Anthony Santos was the complete-game winning pitcher for the Dukes (1-5, 1-1) in Game 2 of the West Suburban Silver split. Santos also went 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI in the second game. Seth Dvorak added a homer and 3 RBI while Kyle Coughlin went 4-for-4. Lincoln-Way East 4, Waubonsie Valley 3: Ben Vietri went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI for the Warriors (3-1). Glenbrook South 5, Wheaton North 1: Greg Scandora and Mike Muto, who drove in the lone run, accounted for the only hits for the Falcons (3-2).

    Waubonsie Valley’s baseball program isn’t known for its quick starts to the season. Zack Bennema and his teammates are quickly changing that reputation. Behind Bennema’s 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and no walks, the Warriors stayed unbeaten with Wednesday’s 4-0 win at Naperville Central.

    Shannon Hohman likes her Waubonsie Valley softball teammates, but she had pitched to them quite enough. So on Wednesday, the Warriors’ junior right-hander finally got to pitch to a different team, and her first outing of the season was a resounding success. Hohman, who committed to Miami (Ohio) at the end of the 2013 summer season, fired a 1-hitter with 14 strikeouts and her teammates scratched out a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Burlington Central, 1-0, in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader at The Dome at The Ballpark in Rosemont. Burlington Central used a 3-hitter from senior lefty Brooke Gaylord to come back and win the second game, 3-0, and avoid an 0-3 start for the first time since 2006.

    Lake Park 2, Prospect 0: Rhett Rapshus pitched a no-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks for the Lancers (1-1), who scored once in the third inning and once in the fifth. Waubonsie Valley 8, Lake Park 1: Tyler Hasper pitched into the seventh for the Warriors, who improved to 2-0. Luke Marzano had 2 RBI while Ben Vietri, Ryan Jones and Zack Bennema had 2 hits apiece. Gunnar Barlund went 2-for-3 for Lake Park (1-1). Naperville Central 4, Oswego 1: Bobby McMillen’s first-inning solo home run helped pave the way for the Redhawks (3-0). Kevin Clifford drove in 2 runs. Brett Kirk and Jack Wooldridge combined on a 3-hitter. Glenbard West 1, Butler, Ky. 0: Luke Domask’s two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh provided the Hilltoppers (2-0) with the walk-off win in Louisville. Winning pitcher Dennis Rudolph needed only 69 pitches to finish the game. Domask and Grant Greeno each had 2 hits. West Chicago 9, Addison Trail 6: Jon Michiels and Peyton Seidler drove in 2 runs apiece for the Wildcats (2-1), who pulled away in a 6-run fourth inning. Grant Hosticka went 2-for-3 for West Chicago. Montini 5, Benton 3: Austin Kline doubled, homered and drove in 3 runs on 3 hits for the victorious Broncos (2-0). Rhett Wojkovich also had 3 hits while Jake Pestel went 2-for-4. Sean Frontzak pitched into the sixth inning to earn the win. Lisle 12, Rauner 10: The Lions (3-2) broke out to an 11-1 lead but had to hold off a late rally from Rauner. Cliff Krause went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Griffin Huba also had 2 hits while Eric Puccini picked up the win. Wheaton Academy 4, Maple Grove, Minn. 3: The Warriors (1-0) scored twice in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory in Florida. Luke Kram drove in 2 runs while Kram, Luis Romos and Brett Albaugh had 2 hits apiece. Ryan Beck and Brandon Valente combined on the mound for Wheaton Academy. Wheaton North 9, Central Hardin, Ky. 5: The Falcons (2-0) broke out to an 8-0 second-inning lead to win in Kentucky. Zach Colangelo went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. Winning pitcher Andrew Slivinski and Charles Robin combined on a 5-hitter. Batavia 6, Willowbrook 1: The Warriors (1-1) were within 2-1 until Batavia pulled away with a 4-run bottom of the fifth. Tyler Zunkel, Mike Rothmund, Tucker Newling and A.J. Nolen each had a hit for Willowbrook. St. Francis 5, Fluvanna County, Va. 4: The Spartans (2-1) held on after taking a 5-0 lead to the bottom of the seventh. Jake Radel and Will Purdom had 2 hits apiece. Matt Kelly picked up the win. Bullitt East, Ky. 4, St. Francis 3: The Spartans (2-1) fell in Florida despite starting pitcher Ryan Hodgett allowing only 2 hits in 5 innings. Jason Sullivan went 2-for-3. Fremd 5, Glenbard North 1: The Panthers (3-1) led 1-0 until Fremd scored twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh inning. Nolan Jasinski went 2-for-3 and drove in Glenbard North’s lone run with a third-inning single. North Bullitt, Ky. 5, Glenbard South 0: Will Cornwell had 2 of the Raiders’ 4 hits in Glenbard South’s (1-1) loss in South Carolina. Elk Grove 13, York 6: Nolan Spencer went 2-for-3 with a triple for the Dukes (0-3). Houston, Tenn. 9, Neuqua Valley 2: The score in Memphis was knotted at 2-2 until Houston scored 7 runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Josh Piotrowski and Alex DiFranco drove in runs for Neuqua Valley (0-2).

    With the first day of spring passing, and the last remnants of winter slowly melting away, all of the Upstate Eight Conference boys track teams were gathered in the field house at Batavia to celebrate the end of the indoor season in style. Finishing with a total of 117 points, Neuqua Valley was able to dominate the rest of the conference and win the 2014 UEC Indoor meet, winning six of the 15 events held and losing out on a seventh win by 1/10th of a second. Waubonsie Valley, host Batavia, St. Charles North and Geneva rounded out the top five.
