    Cheerleading squads from all over Illinois converge on Bloomington Friday as the 2013 IHSA's competitive cheerleading state championships open. The suburbs are well represented in the 100 schools that made the championships. "We're so excited," said Conant cheerleading coach Dana Muszynski. "We're a young team, but they're very determined and driven." Only the top 10 in each of the three divisions return to compete on Saturday for the state titles.

    The Illinois High School Association cheerleading sectionals took place Saturday at Rolling Meadows High School. Among the top scorers were Neuqua Valley High School, James B. Conant High School, Vernon Hills High School and Buffalo Grove High School. "The kids worked really hard, and I have an outstanding coaching staff," said Buffalo Grove coach Jeffrey Siegal.

    Lisle notches 9th straight win Dec 18, 2012 12:00 AM
    For two girls that played a lot on the perimeter in the past, Lisle’s Kristina Fernette and Kelly Urban aren’t afraid to mix it up inside. Hard work comes with incentive. “It’s like at practice, we have three different rebounding drills that we always do,” Fernette said. “There’s always consequences if we don’t do them well.” Lisle did just about everything well Tuesday. Fernette had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Urban 11 points and 8 boards and the Lions beat Timothy Christian 45-24 for their ninth straight win.

    Glenbard South's Chaun Rickette is pretty much on his own with the analysis of his play Friday night. In the Raiders' Metro Suburban Conference opener with visiting Timothy Christian, the sophomore guard described his play as "terrible." But after his team-high 20 points powered the Raiders past the Trojans 61-46 for their first win, no one else would have chosen that adjective to describe him.

    Sydney Bauman saw an opportunity, and she took it. The 6-foot-2 Glenbard South sophomore played her best varsity game to date, scoring 14 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and blocking 3 Timothy Christian shots in Tuesday night’s 43-33 girls basketball victory in Glen Ellyn.
