At some point, when you’re having some heck of a week, something has to give. So Tyler Crater gave in. He cracked a smile. Shrugged a tad, too. All the Hampshire senior could do was flash a Jordanesque grin as he hustled back on defense. As the final seconds wound down in the third quarter at Grayslake North, Crater canned a long, backpedaling 3-pointer with a defender’s hand in his face. “We were on a run,” Crater said. “I was running down the court and Brendan (Waterworth) saw me. I was like, ‘I’m going to put it up.’ I knew if I made it, Coach wouldn’t be mad. But I knew if I missed it, he’d be like, ‘You got to run some clock.’ But it went in, so he was happy.” Hampshire coach Bob Barnett and the Whip-Purs were one smiling bunch after pulling away for a 76-57 win in a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division matinee Saturday. Crater’s game-high 27 points matched the same number of points he dropped on South Elgin in an overtime win Wednesday night. He shot 8 of 14 from the floor and 8 of 8 from the foul line, as Hampshire (19-4, 7-2) defeated Grayslake North (13-10, 3-6) for the second time in three weeks.
Zak attack leads to 11th-place medal Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Grant senior Sami Jo Zak practiced day after day over the last few years, harboring a dream of making it to state one day. She ended up carrying the dream farther than she ever imagined possible on Saturday afternoon in the girls bowling state tournament at Cherry Bowl Lanes. Zak wasn’t sure if she was in line to receive one of the top 12 medals, even after throwing a final game of 257. The final announcement that Zak finished 11th place with a 12-game total of 2,554 pins caught her by a total surprise.

Cary-Grove tops Grayslake North in FVC ‘championship’ game Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley Conference may continue to choose not to call it a championship game, but don’t tell that to the players or coaches from Cary-Grove and Grayslake North. The Trojans and Knights played with all the intensity of any championship affair Friday night when the FVC division champions met in Cary-Grove’s Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium. And when all was said and done, Cary-Grove’s girls basketball team had come away with its third straight “unofficial” FVC crown after holding off the Knights 56-48. “It was definitely one of our goals to make it to the crossover championship game,” said Cary-Grove senior Olivia Jakubicek, who scored a game-high 24 points for the Trojans. “Even though they don’t call it a championship game we wanted to give a championship effort.”

Lakes senior forward Jake Kohler and Benet senior guard Christen Prasse have earned MVP honors from the Daily Herald for their recent basketball performances. Kohler blocked a last-second layup attempt to help Lakes defeat North Chicago by a point and move the Eagles into a first-place tie in the league. Prasse tied a personal best with 30 points plus 7 assists in a decisive victory over Providence.

Emily Stinner and Emily Dugan hit some big long-range buckets to lead the way for visiting Grayslake North in its historic 61-45 win over usually-stingy Grayslake Central on Tuesday night. Grayslake North’s 10th win in a row ran its record to 25-2 and capped a 12-0 run in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division. It’s the first time the Knights have won the division. They visit Cary-Grove on Friday (7 p.m.) in what amounts to the unofficial FVC championship game.

If you expected the unexpected Saturday, your expectations were certainly realized. Both the Lake Zurich and Grayslake North girls bowling teams earned spots for the first time in school history in the IHSA state tournament to be held Friday and Saturday at Cherry Bowl in Rockford. Lake Zurich rolled to its first-ever sectional title by posting 5,244 pins, and Grayslake North finished runner-up with 5,206 just ahead of Marengo (5,198) and host Warren (5,159) at the IHSA Warren sectional at Bertrand Lanes in Waukegan.
