    Local officials have yet to receive U.S. Education Department letters requiring schools to include students with disabilities in sports programs, or provide equal alternatives. Elgin Area School District U-46 officials were among those unaware of the new mandate as of late Thursday. Patrick Mogge, director of school and community relations, said the impact on the athletic budget is still unknown.

    A high school football team on Chicago's Northwest Side is benefiting from a donation made by Barrington High School football coach Joe Sanchez. Cleats, practice jerseys and pads are just a few of the items that the 52 players at Kelvyn Park High School football are putting to use. "(Barrington High School's) practice jerseys ... were better than our game jerseys," the Kelvyn Park coach says.

     
  • Stevenson High inks $505,000 deal with Pepsi Dec 18, 2012 5:08 PM
    Stevenson High School's beverage machines will exclusively stock PepsiCo products starting next month, under a new deal that will pay the school more than $505,000 over the five-year contract. The contract means drinks made by Coca-Cola no longer will be offered in the campus' vending machines or in snack bars. Likewise, Coke drinks won't be sold at athletic events or other activities.

    A Stevenson High School senior is facing felony drug charges after a schoolmate's on-campus overdose, police said Monday. Matthew R. Sanders, 17, of the 0-100 block of Debill Court in Vernon Hills, had been selling drugs near campus from his car, Lincolnshire Police Chief Peter Kinsey said.

    Stevenson High School's Science Olympiad team earned multiple medals at the Hinsdale South Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 8. The team from the Lincolnshire school captured first place in 10 events. Stevenson also had a top-three finisher in 18 of 23 events.

    Already widely used on campus, Apple iPad tablet computers could be distributed to all Stevenson High School students by 2015. Every incoming freshman could get one of the popular devices starting next year. “There’s no doubt that the use of tablets in classrooms is one of the biggest technological changes on the educational landscape,” Stevenson spokesman Jim Conrey said.

    Stevenson High School officials are debating whether to change soft drink vendors. The Coca-Cola Co. has supplied cold drinks on the Lincolnshire campus since 2007. Before then, PepsiCo was the school's vendor.

    Two Lake County schools will host public forums about the dangers of heroin use in upcoming weeks. The first event is Monday, Nov. 12 at Vernon Hills High School. The second is Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Wauconda High.

    Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire again has swept the five academic categories among high schools, according to state report card data from 92 suburban school districts examined by the Daily Herald. For the second consecutive year, Stevenson led in composite scores, reading, math, science and ACT college entrance exam results.

  • Contractor accused of defrauding suburbs Oct 18, 2012 3:48 PM
    A Niles contractor is charged with defrauding several suburban taxing bodies out of about $400,000 in public works projects by violating the state's Prevailing Wage Act. Alan M. Harris, 46, is accused of obtaining construction contracts and then forcing his employees to kickback some their pay earned from working on publicly funded jobs to him. Harris is currently free on bond.
