Two Northwest suburban teachers are among the nine finalists for the Illinois State Board of Education's 2012-2013 Illinois Teacher of the Year award, which will be announced on Oct. 20. The Northwest suburbs are represented by Andrew Conneen, a political science teacher at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, and Brian Curtin, an English teacher at Schaumburg High School in Schaumburg.

In what's become an annual tradition, Stevenson High School students will try to set a third world record with an upcoming fundraising stunt. This time, participants will gather Sept. 15 to attempt to set a Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of people salsa dancing with glow sticks. The current record is 418 people.

Stevenson High School's most recent graduates matched campus records on the ACT college-entrance exam, school officials announced. The students in the Lincolnshire school's Class of 2012, who took the test at various times during the 2011-12 term, posted a composite score of 26.2 out of a possible 36, officials said.

As he spoke to a group of concerned parents and other people about the dangers of underage drinking and drug use Wednesday night, Lake County circuit court Judge Daniel Shanes emphasized the need for the audience members to have similar conversations at home. "We have to talk to our kids," Shanes said told the group at Stevenson High School. "Silence isnt golden. Silence is permission."

Stevenson High School will host a public forum about adolescent drug use from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9. Stevenson has held similar forums each of the past few years, always in the spring to coincide with prom season, spokesman Jim Conrey said. Its a pretty fortuitous time to talk about these things, he said.
