  • No restructuring for Davis, Richmond schools in St. Charles Sep 19, 2013 2:24 PM
    Davis and Richmond schools in St. Charles will remain grade level centers with the same staff as currently exists following a final judicial order in the lawsuit that sought to revert the buildings back to regular elementary schools. The district will right a new plan to help students labeled failing under No Child Left Behind laws and may have to offer school choice for the first time at Davis.

    The grade level centers will stay in St. Charles Unit District 303, but a major restructuring is still possible. “The reconfiguration was not in and of itself unlawful,” Judge David Akemann said. “The district has the power to alter boundaries, but the alterations cannot remove the (No Child Left Behind) mandate. How those mandates are carried out is, and will remain, with the district.”

    A Kane County judge has ruled in favor of a group of parents seeking to undo the conversion of Davis and Richmond schools into grade level centers. However, the judge's order doesn't go so far as to specifically say undo the conversion. Instead, the order will require St. Charles Unit District 303 to develop plans for failing groups of students to succeed. Whether or not that is possible in the grade level centers will be a matter for debate when the two sides go back before the judge next week.

    The leadership lineup was shuffled a bit for St. Charles schools, which opened Wednesday. Five schools got new principals. They are St. Charles North, with Audra Christenson; Haines Middle School, with Pam Jensen; Thompson Middle School, with Tim Loversky; Wredling Middle School, with Stephen Morrill; and Anderson Elementary, with Patricia Gonzalez.

    Last year the line formed at 3 a.m. for Elgin Community College’s school supply giveaway, which officially started at 10 a.m. By then about 4,000 people were waiting for the chance at backpacks filled with school supplies for their children. “It’s very bittersweet for us,” said Katie Storey, ECC’s student life coordinator. Organizers distributed more than 2,200 backpacks, but the event underscores how many families need help.

    When Governor Pat Quinn signed a one-year moratorium on the establishment of new virtual charter schools into law, suburban administrators expected an end to the appeal process currently under way for one such school. But that may not be the case. Attorneys on one side argue the commission has a legal responsibility to complete the appeal while those on the other side say the commission no longer has authority to approve the virtual charter school. A decision is expected this week.

    Seniors at Jacobs, Hampshire and Dundee-Crown high schools will have the opportunity to take a new math class next year with a textbook designed especially for them. The course was developed by the Alliance for College Readiness which includes Elgin Community College and all of its feeder high school districts — Elgin Area School District U-46, St. Charles Community Unit District 303, Burlington-based Central Unit District 301, and Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300, the only district to offer the course next year.

Special recognition is also given to those retiring from education this school year.

    Seven years after Illinois lawmakers passed a law intended to curtail big pension-boosting pay hikes for retiring educators, some local school districts still are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in penalties to the state for giving such raises. Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 paid nearly half a million dollars in penalties to the state in the 2011-2012 school year.

    A friendly rivalry between St. Charles North and South Elgin High Schools helped welcome a new Jersey Mike's sandwich shop to South Elgin this month. Jersey Mike's employees handed out 8,000 coupons throughout the area for a free sub with a $1 donation. When customers brought the coupon to the counter, they could decide whether the $1 donation would go to the boosters club of either school.

    The organizers behind a proposed online charter school Friday released a 1,018-page answer to the questions posed by members of the 18 school districts that have to vote on the request. Several of the boards, including Geneva and Kaneland, are due to vote on the proposal as soon as Monday.

    A St. Charles couple has sued School District 303, arguing their 18-year-old son with autism was mistreated by officials and teachers at St. Charles North High School after his parents pushed for his inclusion in advanced classes during the 2011-2102 school year. Sandra and Bogdan Stanek seek $900,000 in damages for emotional distress and for a judge to hear their case after a hearing officer denied a chance for them to air their grievances.
