    Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 board members Thursday heard the annual update of the district’s capital improvement plan — one which promises another peak of activity during the next few years. Associate Superintendent for Business Dave Torres said there was a high level of activity from 2006 to 2009, but the busyness of the coming years — in which costs of $52.6 million are anticipated — will put several issues to rest for a very long time.

    Schaumburg High School was buzzing with school spirit as many of its own shaved their heads during a pep assembly to raise awareness and funds for children’s cancer research. The school hosted its third St. Baldrick’s shaving event on March 14 and has raised $102,390.84 to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

     
  • Police say shootings of Palatine father, son a double homicide Mar 20, 2014 11:24 AM
    A 15-year-old Palatine boy and his father were shot and killed early Wednesday morning on the village's northeast side in what police say they are investigating as a double homicide. Luis Reynoso and his 38-year-old father, Segundo Reynoso, were found with fatal gunshot wounds in an apartment shortly after midnight.

    The Varsity Vikettes at Fremd High School had a busy season. The team, which is coached by Shana Dinham, began competing in the fall with the Viking Marching Band. Highlights of the team’s season included performing in the Illini Marching Band Festival at the University of Illinois and securing a second place finish in state competition.

    Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 strives to introduce all of its students to various fields of study, and with an annual event, fifth and sixth grade girls get to explore mathematics, science, and engineering before they enter high school.The fourth annual GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science) conference was held at Conant High School on Feb. 8, and area students participated in hands-on activities that focused on engineering, science, and math presented entirely by women.

  • Debate continues on shooting drills with students Feb 17, 2014 4:49 AM
    A new state law requires all schools to conduct at least one "active shooter" drill every school year. Many suburban school districts, though, have been doing them well before they were mandatory. But one area of disagreement is whether these realistic drills, with SWAT teams and staged casualties, should involve students. “Kids in our system don’t know school without those kinds of drills,” said Bob Ross, assistant superintendent for secondary education for Naperville Unit District 203.

  • Dist. 211 to prevent leaks at Conant, Fremd Feb 14, 2014 12:32 AM
    Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 board members Thursday recommended a $1.46 million repair of Conant High School’s roof and a $248,000 repair of Fremd High School’s skylight this summer to prevent a potential for leaks in the near future. The maintenance issues were discovered through an update of the district’s Health/Life Safety Survey, required for all facilities every 10 years and which was most recently done in 2010.
