  • North Chicago picking up steam Jan 18, 2014 12:06 AM
Every season North Chicago boys basketball coach Gerald Coleman predicts that his team will win the state tournament, and every year his team falls a little short. Coleman feels that his could be the year that the Warhawks go all the way in Class 3A. “The competition gets tougher as you go and everything has to click at the right time,” Coleman said. “Last year we had some off-the court issues that took us from the things we wanted to do.” Coleman also knows his team has to take care of buisness before the tournament starts. His Warhawks continued to do that Friday night, as they blasted visiting Wauconda 86-41 to remain perfect in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

  • Reiser, Antioch take charge Jan 15, 2014 11:19 PM
Charged up like no one else to start Wednesday night’s first-place showdown against North Chicago, Antioch point guard Ashley Reiser finished the game, ppropriately enough, by taking a charge. With North Chicago trailing by two points, Warhawks 6-foot sophomore Tinee’sha Coleman came barreling into the lane. Reiser stepped into the paint to meet her and drew the foul with 7.4 seconds on the clock. Paige Gallimore then hit 2 free throws with 3.8 seconds to go, and Antioch held on for a 58-54 win on its home court.

  • North Chicago takes title from Crystal Lake South Dec 21, 2013 5:18 PM
Crystal Lake South and senior Sara Mickow did their best to rebound from a slow start against North Chicago in Saturday afternoon’s championship game of the 25th Annual Northern Illinois Girls Holiday Classic. The 5-foot-11 Mickow grabbed 27 rebounds to go with 16 points as the Gators got in position to cut a 21-point halftime deficit to single digits in the third quarter. But North Chicago recovered to build a 22-point lead and claim its first Classic title with a 69-53 victory in McHenry.

  • Vernon Hills can’t match North Chicago Dec 17, 2013 11:45 PM
By the time Lem Turner and his Vernon Hills basketball teammates adjusted to North Chicago’s size and athleticism, it was too late in the North Suburban Prairie Division showdown. Turner blocked 3 shots in the fourth quarter, but North Chicago won 80-68 on the road Tuesday night. Kurt Hall had 28 points and 20 rebounds for North Chicago (6-1, 3-0).

  • North Chicago hangs on against Grant Dec 14, 2013 10:44 PM
Scoring nearly 100 points was fun. And dunking the ball was, too. But in the postgame locker room on Saturday night, the North Chicago boys basketball team probably didn’t have much fun recounting the rest of its 98-81 North Suburban Conference Prairie Division win over host Grant. It wasn’t exactly the Warhawks’ most complete game. While they were rolling up the offense, which included 31 points from JayQuan McCloud and a couple of dunks and 22 points from Kurt Hall, they were letting Grant do the same thing. North Chicago dominated the first half and built a 17-point halftime lead, but Grant dug deep and matched North Chicago point-for-point in the second half and even outscored North Chicago in the fourth quarter by 8 points. And that was with the Warhawks’ starters playing most of the game.

  • Reiser sisters, Antioch rise to the occasion Dec 3, 2013 11:27 PM
The Antioch girls basketball lead had hit 30 points on Tuesday night in North Chicago. Evidently, that was a wake-up call for the home-standing Lady Warhawks of North Chicago. That’s when teammates Kylah Collins and Carolyn Leonard teamed up to make a run at the once-beaten Sequoits. The Antioch lead had been cut in half. And then one of the Sequoits’ freshman twins stepped up to stop the bleeding. Amy Reiser, a clear look-a-like to sister Ashley Reiser, somehow landed a bizarre bank shot. Both Reiser twins hit double figures to help leading scorer Paige Gallimore, as Antioch knocked off North Chicago 71-52 in a North Suburban Prairie Division opener.

  • North Chicago handles Round Lake Oct 26, 2013 12:15 AM
North Chicago 49, Round Lake 20: The visiting Warhawks prevailed the season finale for both squads. North Chicago, which snapped a four-game losing streak, finished 4-5 and 2-4 in the North Suburban Prairie Division. Round Lake fell to 1-8, 0-6 with its seventh straight defeat. “We had goals of finishing better than we will, but that being said, I am very proud of our guys and their hard work,” first-year Round Lake coach Jordan Eder said this week. “We are trying to build a program here, and that can’t happen right away. It will take time and a lot of hard work. I’m very proud of our seniors for buying in this year and setting the bar high for our expectations of this program moving forward. In every loss we had this year our kids continued to fight and play hard at every level, and that’s all we can ask for. We will work very hard this off season and continue to improve each year.”

  • Lakes puts finishing touches on perfect Prairie run Oct 19, 2013 12:20 AM
What looked like a laugher turned into a marathon, as visiting Lakes held on to defeat North Chicago 51-34 in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division football game Friday. The victory capped a second-straight perfect run through the NSC Prairie for Lakes (7-1, 6-0), which visits Mundelein next Friday night in its conference crossover. North Chicago (3-5, 1-4) dropped its fourth game in a row, as the Warhawks were officially eliminated from playoff contention.

  • Warren gets win No. 5 against N. Chicago Oct 12, 2013 1:14 AM
Three hours and 99 points after the opening kickoff Friday night, Warren emerged with its fifth victory of the season and a probable playoff berth. The host Blue Devils (5-2) ran past North Chicago (3-4) by a 61-38 score in a North Suburban Conference crossover game.

  • Vernon Hills perseveres, emerges with victory Oct 5, 2013 12:13 AM
Friday night’s game between host North Chicago and Vernon Hills was a classic defensive struggle. The majority of this North Suburban Prairie contest was played between the 20-yard lines, with neither team really being able to gain the upper hand offensively. But when the chips were down and time was starting to run out in a scoreless deadlock, the visiting Cougars managed to put together a late scoring drive and hold off a late North Chicago surge to capture a hard-fought 6-0 victory.
