  • Seniors step forward for St. Viator May 21, 2013 10:24 PM
Niles North was on a roll. The Vikings had just rallied to stun St. Viator in the second game of Tuesday’s boys volleball regional semifinal at Loyola to tie the match and send it into a third and deciding set. And while the energized Vikes sprinted out of their huddle early and onto the court ready for game three, the Lions and coach Chris Boylan stood on the sidelines, calmly talking things over. “We were still confident,” said St. Viator senior libero Anthony Giovenco. “We kind of lost our intensity in the second game but we knew we couldn’t let up.” “The guys relaxed a little after set one,” agreed Boylan. “But in the third set our seniors took over.” Led by Giovenco, who Boylan said gave a “virtually flawless” performance, the Lions controlled the final game in a 25-15, 18-25, 25-12 victory.

  • Phillips fills it up in a Warren win Dec 28, 2012 10:53 PM
The shot — freakishly athletic, a catch-and-throw more so than a catch-and-shoot — soared vertically, hit high on the backboard, bounced on the rim and fell through the hoop. Warren senior forward Alyssa Phillips was even fouled on the play under the Niles North basket. So stunned that the ball dropped in, she smiled. "I just threw it up," Phillips said. "I don't even know how it went in." Phillips had that kind of game Friday in Warren's 54-35 win over the Vikings that evened its record at 2-2 in its own Blue Devil Classic.Phillips' performance — a career-high 20 points and 9 rebounds — was easier to explain than her sweet shot. She's been flashing her potential since scoring 30 points, her "lifetime high," as she called it, in a freshman game against Evanston three years ago.
