    High school athletes across the suburbs face off on basketball courts, football fields and baseball diamonds; they size each other up in tennis matches, around golf tees and across wrestling mats. The give it their all for their schools, their teams, their classmates and their coaches. The Daily Herald put together a video to honor athletes at our suburban high schools.     NORMAL — Marian Catholic, team of destiny?“I don't think it was destiny,” said Marian's Kauai Bradley. “I just look at it as opportunity.” Opportunity sure knocked for Bradley Saturday, and she answered. The lanky, long-armed sophomore's stickback basket with 0.7 seconds left gave Marian a 48-47 win over Rolling Meadows in a riveting Class 4A final at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University.

     
  • St. Viator meets the challenge from Ulis, Marian Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
    St. Viator coach Mike Howland didn't need to look at a scouting report to know how to stop state-ranked Marian Catholic. Spartans junior point guard Tyler Ulis victimized the Lions for 37 points his freshman year, and 38 points last season. On Friday night at Cahill Gymnasium, St. Viator "held" Ulis to 30 points and the Lions' own junior star, Ore Arogundade was every bit as good in pouring in 27 points and leading the Lions to a 66-61 ESCC win.

     
  • McInerney, Benet win a thriller Jan 17, 2013 12:00 AM
    This one had it all, from four-point plays to acrobatic drives to the basket and dominant play on the interior. It was another typical night in the ultracompetitive East Suburban Catholic Conference. Benet, playing its first home game since Nov. 30, treated its fans to a stirring 51-50 victory against highly regarded Marian Catholic on Thursday night thanks to the heroics of senior forward Pat McInerney. It was McInerney’s free throw with 1.8 seconds remaining that broke a 50-50 tie.

    When Brandon New took over as head football coach this year at St. Viator, a state playoff berth was only a distant thought. But after Friday’s 31-21 victory over Marian Catholic Friday at Forest View in Arlington Heights, the Lions appear to be on the cusp of their first playoff appearance in three years. “I am just happy for these boys,” New said. “They have put in so much time and so much work. We went from 2-7 from last year and able to resurrect the program.”

    Mike Brennan atoned for 3 strikeouts in his first 3 at-bats with a game-winning RBI single to give Oak Park-River Forest a 4-3 victory and a Class 4A title against West Suburban Silver rival and defending champion Lyons. Marian Catholic capped its improbable run from a sub-.500 team to 3A state champion with a 10-2 win over La Salle-Peru.

    St. Viator knew what it had to do at Marian Catholic on Saturday afternoon with first place in the East Suburban Catholic Conference at stake. Good thing the Lions were so focused, because plenty did not go their way. Such as: The Spartans shot 80 percent from the field in the first three quarters (17 for 21), and sophomore sensation Tyler Ulis scored a career high of 38 points. The Lions, meanwhile, connected on just 19 of 38 free throws, including 13 of 25 in the fourth quarter. Yet St.Viator still won. The 80-74 thriller in Chicago Heights left the Lions with a 4-0 conference mark and a 16-3 record.

    Senior Julia Dabrowski scored a triple-double the hard way Friday night to lead Stevenson’s girls basketball team past Marian Catholic 55-44 in Round 4 of the Maine West Tip-Off Classic in Des Plaines. The 6-foot-2 Dabrowski finished with 11 points, 12 blocks and 14 rebounds.

    To St. Francis, Saturday wasn’t merely about collecting a medal and finishing a season with a win. Sure, the Spartans wanted those tangible rewards. Even more, though, it was a time to reflect on the journey. This group’s journey ended the way so many Spartans before them, with a win — this one, a 25-20, 25-11 victory over Marian Catholic in the Class 3A third-place game at Redbird Arena.

    Late first-half touchdowns can be just as important as the ones scored in the second half. Marian Central Catholic marched 80 yards in 7 plays, capped by quarterback Chris Streveler’s 11-yard touchdown run with 37.9 seconds left in the first half, to break a 7-7 deadlock and give the Hurricanes a 14-7 halftime advantage. From there, the state’s top-ranked Class 5A team pulled away in the second half for a 28-7 Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division triumph over Marmion on Friday night at Fichtel Field in Aurora.

    There would be a natural inclination to declare the winner of Friday's visit by Carmel to Joliet Catholic as the East Suburban Catholic Conference football champion. The last four ESCC races have ended with defending champ Carmel and perennial powerhouse Joliet Catholic in the top two spots.
