  • Loss to Marian Catholic leaves Benet wanting more Feb 4, 2015 11:10 PM
Benet would love another shot at Marian Catholic. Another shot not only would mean both teams went downstate in Class 4A girls basketball, but it also would give the Redwings a chance to show they’re better than Wednesday’s 59-49 loss in Lisle.

  • A feast for McNamara, St. Viator Jan 9, 2015 11:25 PM
It was Big Mac time for St.Viator on Friday. Senior Pat McNamara scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Lions past Marian Catholic 65-48 in Arlington Heights. “We have come out a little flat in the third quarter,” said McNamara, who scored 14 of his team’s 16 points in the third quarter. “We had a 10-point lead at the time and we wanted to extend it. We did that tonight and that was good.” McNamara was on fire with this shooting, converting 10 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 7 outside the arc.

  • Quick-starting Marian Catholic takes charge at St. Viator Jan 3, 2015 8:22 PM
From Marian Catholic’s 16-0 run to start the game to Olivia Solimene’s steal and layup at the end, St. Viator never quit playing hard in the East Suburban Catholic Conference Saturday matinee. But the Spartans showed why they are considered one of the best teams in the state with a 58-26 victory at the Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. With its all-stater and leading scorer Teniya Page sidelined with a minor injury, Marian Catholic’s 15th win in 17 games was pretty much locked up in the first eight minutes.

  • Second straight setback for Montini Dec 30, 2014 10:29 PM
Losses don’t happen very often to the Montini girls basketball program. Consecutive losses never occur, even against strong competition. The Broncos certainly had their chances to pull out Tuesday’s third-place game of the sixth annual Montini Christmas Tournament, but instead the defending Class 3A state champions suffered the sting of a 60-55 overtime loss to Marian Catholic. Coupled with Monday’s 58-42 semifinal loss to Benet, it’s the first time Montini (13-3) has lost back-to-back games since 2004. Marian Catholic (12-2) was third in Class 4A last year after winning the 2012 4A state title.

  • Malonga answers Benet’s call Dec 19, 2014 12:35 AM
Through seven lead changes and eight ties, Benet’s boys basketball team searched for a difference-maker. Along came Jason Malonga. The junior’s 3-point play at the start of overtime provided the Redwings the spark and the margin — though narrow — they needed to pull out Thursday’s 46-42 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory in Lisle.

  • St. Viator again among elite in new-look ESCC Sep 16, 2014 9:13 PM
The East Suburban Catholic Conference is, as St. Viator coach Jack Halpin phrased it, “for boy’s golf one of the toughest conferences top to bottom in the state.” Halpin should know – his Lions have won the league title 7 of the last 10 years – and now Marian Central is learning the same thing week by week. Marian, competing in it’s first season in the ESCC, was defeated by Viator 156-173 in dual play at Old Orchard Country Club Tuesday afternoon.

Geneva didn’t start the Class 4A third-place game Saturday night at Redbird Arena in Normal like it wanted to, but the Vikings sure finished that way. And that goes for their season, too. Geneva fell behind by 12 points in the opening quarter, rallied but never could catch Marian Catholic in a 45-34 loss. The Vikings (26-7) finished fourth in the state for the second time in six years.

As Stevenson and Marian Catholic squared off in the “When Sides Collide” Shootout at Glenbard East, it was a showcase for two of the best guards in the state. And the Patriots’ Jalen Brunson and the Spartans’ Tyler Ulis certainly lived up to their billing. In the end, it was Brunson having the greater impact with 32 points in Stevenson’s 76-66 win on Saturday in Lombard.

  • Millender, Marian too much for Rolling Meadows Jan 20, 2014 10:57 PM
Dan Murray watched Marian Catholic edge Rolling Meadows for the Class 4A state girls basketball championship from home on television last March. When the two team met Monday night, he had a much better seat. He was on the Spartans bench calling the shots. And Marian Catholic made plenty of them for their first-year coach. Led by senior Ashton Millender’s career-tying 29 points, No 6-ranked Marian Catholic ran past No. 2 Rolling Meadows 75-59 in a showcase game of the 24th annual McDonald’s Shootout at Willowbrook High School in snowy Villa Park.
