  • Hampshire wins in Barnett’s return Dec 11, 2012 10:12 PM
A stress-free game was exactly what Bob Barnett needed Tuesday night in his return to the bench. The Hampshire boys basketball team cruised to a 52-38 nonconference victory over Marengo as Barnett came back to coach in his first game this season. "I feel great," Barnett said. "My wife came up to me before the game, gave me a kiss and said, You're already red in the face. You've got to relax.' " Barnett suffered two heart attacks on Nov. 20 and missed the first six games of the season. Originally he was told he could not return until Dec. 20, but after meeting with his doctors the timeframe was moved up. He was given medical clearance to return to practice on Monday.

  • Burlington C. makes adjustments, wins No. 5 Sep 28, 2012 11:35 PM
There’s an old saying that lack of preparation leads to great perspiration, but after host Marengo scored a touchdown in the first two minutes of Friday night’s Big Northern East conference match-up, Burlington Central coaches may have felt as if they over-prepared for the host team. The Rockets’ coaching staff made adjustments after that initial drive and Burlington Central came back to capture a 28-6 victory and become playoff eligible for the second straight year.

  • Burlington Central doesn’t get trapped Sep 19, 2012 8:29 PM
Marv Leavitt called it a "trap game". It's that game you know you're supposed to win but after a tough road loss the night before and the goings on of homecoming week, Leavitt had cause to be a little concerned when his Burlington Central girls volleyball team hosted Marengo in Big Northern East action on Rocket Hill Wednesday evening. And even though Marengo was the aggressor early on, Burlington Central's superior defense and serving won out in the end as the Rockets notched a 25-14, 25-17 win just 24 hours after suffering a tough 3-set loss at Richmond-Burton in a battle for first place in the conference.

  • Big Northern East still goes through Richmond Aug 23, 2012 9:23 PM
When is a question more like an answer? When the question pertains to Richmond-Burton's ability to reload and still challenge for the Big Northern Conference's East Division title. Entering last season it seemed as though the Rockets' run of back-to-back division titles was in jeopardy. They opened the campaign with new players at 17 of 22 positions following an 11-1 finish in 2010. They were vulnerable, right?

  • Marengo stops Grayslake North Jun 5, 2012 11:37 PM
Grayslake North fell to defending state champ 2-1 in Tuesday's Class 3A DeKalb supersectional, but it was a vast improvement over a 7-0 loss to the same team last year as the Knights wrapped up the most successful season in the program's history.

  • Marengo blanks Burlington Central Jun 2, 2012 7:38 PM
Several times Burlington Central had the baserunner and the Rockets were just waiting for that one big hit to score. It never came. Despite outhitting Marengo 8-4 and having more baserunners, Central could not manage a run in its 3-0 loss in a semifinal of the Class 3A Belvidere North softball sectional Saturday.

  • Rain forces reschedules of Fox Valley tournament games May 31, 2012 7:41 PM
Thursday's rain set back Class 3A and 4A baseball and sectional semifinals for five Fox Valley teams.

  • Burlington Central advances to regional final May 23, 2012 10:40 PM
Burlington Central junior Michael Scott hasn't been used as a reliever since early on this season. But Wednesday he was forced to. He came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning with the tying run on first base. The right-hander got out of the jam with allowing only run — that coming on an error — as the top-seeded Rockets beat No. 4 Marengo, 8-4, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Hampshire baseball regional.

  • Marengo beats Burlington Central again Apr 12, 2012 8:50 PM
Burlington Central had the champs on the ropes. But the champs counterpunched and finally knocked the Rockets out. Defending Big Northern East and state Class 3A champ Marengo rallied for 5 runs in the fourth inning to overcome an early deficit and down Central, 11-7, in Big Northern East softball action in Marengo Thursday.

  • Burlington Central’s Jensen lights out against Marengo Apr 12, 2012 9:00 PM
No opposing baseball coach can offer his team a better scouting report on burgeoning Burlington Central ace Riley Jensen this season than first-year Marengo coach Josh Maas, but no amount of inside information could slow Jensen in Centrals 10-0, six-inning victory on Rocket Hill Thursday. Maas, a 2003 Central graduate who worked as an assistant varsity coach for the Rockets the past three seasons, could only watch as Jensen repeatedly painted corners with his tailing fastball and cutter to complete Centrals 2-game Big Northern East series sweep.

  • Melson, Marengo top Burlington Central Apr 10, 2012 8:58 PM
Burlington Central knew exactly what Marengo pitcher Lindsay Melson was going to do. The Rockets just had a hard time reacting to Melsons up pitch. Melson struck out 15 Rocket batters as the Indians took a 2-1 victory in the Big Northern East opener for both teams on Rocket Hill Tuesday.

  • Kaneland rallies past Marengo Feb 7, 2012 11:38 PM
It’s rare to find a leading scorer like Kaneland junior Ashley Prost. Look up and down at almost any team’s top scorer and they have at least one thing in common — varsity experience. It could be a star coming back after a big year, or even a role player the season before now taking on the scoring load after graduation losses. On the rare occasions a freshman phenom or transfer might break on the scene.

  • Hampshire’s Watzlawick reaches 1,000 Feb 7, 2012 11:19 PM
Rarely does a free throw elicit such a loud cheer. Hampshire senior Tyler Watzlawick had already connected on a pair of first-quarter free throws and was sitting on 999 career points when he stepped to the line again with 5:39 left in the first quarter. Fouled by a Marengo forward on a spin move in the low post, The 6-foot-6 Watzlawick calmly sank his third free throw of the quarter to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

  • Marengo holds off Burlington Central Jan 10, 2012 10:26 PM
Burlington Central needed another shovel. The Rockets spent the evening trying to dig out of a big hole they dug themselves. They almost made it out a couple of times, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit and fell to Marengo, 62-54, in Big Northern East girls basketball action in Burlington. Jessica Laird scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, and freshman Alison Colby had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets (8-10, 2-2).

  • Grayslake North wins title at McHenry Dec 22, 2011 8:15 PM
Brooke Sauer sported big bling, making the Grayslake North senior stand out much like her basketball team has in the last five weeks. Sauer squeezed an elaborate trophy so tall it was nearly the size of 5-foot-3 teammates Jordyn Bowen and Kendall Detweiler. Sauer decorated the trophy by draping her individual medal over it. “It feels great to hold it,” a smiling Sauer said after she and her teammates defeated Marengo 46-31 in the championship game of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic at McHenry on Thursday. “It’ll look nice in our case.”

  • Burlington crashes boards, turns away Marengo Dec 6, 2011 11:43 PM
It looked as though the boys from Marengo had springs tucked inside their basketball shoes. The Indians grabbed 5 offensive rebounds in the game’s first 35 seconds and the first 12 rebounds overall to take an 8-0 lead, but Burlington Central adjusted and dominated the glass the rest of the way to gain a 63-55 victory in the Big Northern Conference East opener for the host Rockets Tuesday.

  • Marengo too much for Elgin Nov 19, 2011 12:20 AM
