    Federico Higuain scored 10 seconds into the second half for Columbus in the Crew’s 1-1 tie with the Chicago Fire on Saturday night. Ethan Finlay redirected a one-hopper from midfield and Fire defender Patrick Ianni overplayed the clearance attempt. Higuain gathered the loose ball, evaded Lovel Palmer and struck the ball into the left corner for his eighth goal of the season.

    Frank Yallop and Brian Bliss have spent much of the nine months since taking over the Chicago Fire front office remaking the team roster. While one report says Jermaine Jones has rejected a $6 million offer from the Fire, sources tell the Daily Herald the team is close to signing an Argentine forward.

    The Chicago Fire took a break from Major League Soccer play, but it couldn’t stop the MLS calendar. Saturday night’s 2-0 loss to English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur at Toyota Park gave the home team a much-needed break from league play after Wednesday’s disheartening 5-1 loss at San Jose. “It was welcome, because it was a tough few days after the last result we had,” said Fire coach/director of soccer Frank Yallop, adding he was just getting over Wednesday’s loss.

    When he signed in 2010 at age 17 as the Chicago Fire’s first homegrown player, Victor Pineda looked destined for great things. That career is still possible, but it will have to restart here, 183 miles to the southeast of Toyota Park. The Fire last month loaned the 21-year-old midfielder to expansion Indy Eleven of the second-division North American Soccer League until the end of the season with the goal of getting him the playing time he didn’t see with the Fire’s first team.

     
  • Penalty kick ties game for Fire, Union Jul 19, 2014 10:24 PM
    Sebastien Le Toux scored on a penalty kick in the 91st minute and the Philadelphia Union came back to tie the Chicago Fire 1-1 on Saturday. Le Toux was awarded the penalty kick after Gonzalo Segares was called for a hand ball inside the penalty area. Segares turned his back on Le Toux’s shot, but the ball hit his right arm. Le Toux calmly slotted home the penalty kick inside the left post, past a diving Sean Johnson. He has scored five goals in his past six games for Philadelphia (5-8-8).

    Veteran Romanian midfielder Razvan Cocis, 31, has signed with the Chicago Fire, team officials announced Monday. “Razvan is an experienced, well-traveled central midfielder,” said Fire head coach Frank Yallop, whose team has struggled to a 3-10-4 record and sits in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. “He brings a wealth of international experience and will be a great addition as we enter the second half of the season.”

    Belgium eliminated the United States from the World Cup. Soccer, however, gained so much momentum the past couple weeks that indications are that it isn't about to retreat into oblivion again. This isn't a time even as recent as 2002 when soccer essentially went away again after the U.S. lost in the quarterfinals.

Just getting out of the Group of Death was an accomplishment and a surprise. In the Round of 16, Belgium was just plain better than the United States, though the Americans showed heart to the bitter end.

Win or go home. “The mentality is that if you have the game of your life, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing, you could win the game,” said former national-team star Brian McBride, who grew up in Arlington Heights. “The focus becomes much tighter. The experience you gained through the group stages, you use to your advantage.”
