Striking performance lifts Loyola past Montini Sep 3, 2011 12:00 AM
The lightning flashes in the skies just south of Loyola Academy seemed lethargic compared to the offensive strikes supplied by both Montini and the Ramblers on Saturday afternoon at Hoerster Field. After Montini converted a recovered fumble into a 1-play, 22-yard scoring drive 40 seconds into the game, Loyola struck back with 28 unanswered points and Montini couldn’t recover. Loyola won the nonconference game 41-24.

Waubonsie Valley’s all-American and all-state senior Zach Wood garners a lot of attention on the field from opposing teams and in the stands from lacrosse fans. While Wood, who scored six times, was imperative to the Warriors winning a Lacrosse Cup on Saturday, it’s taken a team effort and so many contributors for the team to end its season with a trophy. “Last year we really only had a few players for offense and this year everyone scores,” Wood said. “It’s not been one individual all season. We all came together as a team and believed what we could do and did it.”

It can't get much better for Pat Callahan, Charlie Carothers, Robbie Marren and Chad Sawyer. The four seniors won their fourth Illinois High School Lacrosse Association state championship on Saturday as New Trier beat Loyola Academy 9-2 at Oak Park-River Forest High School. It was the seventh consecutive state title for New Trier, and its sixth straight over Loyola with a championship at stake.

Conant midfielder Sammie Van de Linde took possession of a ball near the edge of the box in the 17th minute and curled a shot just past the outstretched fingertips of Stevens into the back of the net, and the Cougars defense did the rest in a 1-0 victory over previously undefeated Loyola in Tuesday's Elk Grove girls soccer supersectional.
