    No. 10 Bartlett's defensive game plan against No. 2 Loyola Academy was to eliminate big plays at the expense of allowing multiple short-yardage passes. The Ramblers said no problem. Senior quarterback Peter Pujals patiently dissected the Bartlett defense by completing 31 of 45 pass attempts for 267 yards as the Ramblers manufactured six separate drives of 12 or more plays to post a 31-7 victory in a Class 8A second-round playoff matchup at Millennium Field in Streamwood Saturday afternoon.

No. 2 Loyola Academy (9-1), the 2011 state runner-up to Bolingbrook, brings an offense averaging 36.6 points and 354.6 yards per game to Millennium Field for a Class 8A matchup against No. 10 Bartlett (7-3) today at 1:30 p.m.

    Suburban students are among the more than 1,600 black American high school seniors who have been designated semifinalists in the annual National Achievement Scholarship Program by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. These scholastically talented young men and women now will continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth more than $2.5 million.

    It was a case of oh-so-close Tuesday night for Neuqua Valley High School product Kevin Cordes, who finished third in the breaststroke in 1:00.58. The NCAA record holder, now attending Arizona, was out in front at the halfway point at the U.S. Olympic trials. "I knew if I wanted to win I had to start out fast and maintain that lead," Cordes said. "Unfortunately it just didn't work out."

    Third-ranked Loyola (10-0-1) will join rival New Trier in Saturdays quarterfinals of the Pepsi Showdown after defeating Hersey 2-0 Thursday afternoon at the Ramblers sports complex in Glenview. Senior Meeghan Smith, just off the injured list, had a hand in both goals, including teammate Margaret Walkers in the 32nd minute to all but cement Loyolas place in the tournaments final eight. Those contests will be played at Olympic Park in Schaumburg, where Loyola will face the Trevians, a 1-0 winner against Jacobs on Thursday night in Wilmette.

    St. Viator Lions will face off against St. Rita Friday for the high school hockey state championship. “It's going to be exciting, playing on the big surface in front of all those fans,” said senior Patrick Gregory. “I feel like this is our year — now we've just got to finish.” Viator has twice played in the championship game — most recently in 1989 — but finished as runner-up both times.

    For all the excitement the Bartlett girls basketball team brought its fans and followers this season, it was only fitting the last game of the year would also be the most thrilling. Senior Kristin Conniff hit a huge 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation and senior Lisa Palmer scored 7 points and had 3 rebounds in overtime as the Hawks outlasted Loyola Academy 61-59 to grab the third-place trophy in the Class 4A state finals at Redbird Arena.

    Under 5:20 was left in the Stevenson Class 4A supersectional and Wheeling’s wonder girls were at again. The surging Wildcats held a 6-point lead and were trying to get to two games under .500 and incredibly two wins away from an IHSA state crown. But Loyola Academy failed to cooperate with the Hollywood storyline and finally ended one of the most thrilling state runs by a Mid-Suburban League girls basketball team. “What a heartbreaker but what a run,” said Wildcats senior forward Leah Malsom after Ramblers (26-7) escaped with a 43-41 decision over the Wildcats (15-19) and moved on to Illinois State’s Redbird Arena for Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinal.

    Fremd’s girls basketball team traveled to Wilmette on Monday night to face Chicago-area ranked Loyola Academy. It was a special night for the Ramblers, who celebrated “Senior and Faculty Night”. The home team concluded the evening with another celebration - its sixth win over a Chicago-area ranked team this season. Anna Schueler scored 13 points and Lauren Kriz added 12 as eight different girls scored for Loyola in a 53-42 triumph over the Vikings.

    Could Prospect really be this good? This good, meaning, shooting 27 of 46 from the floor, outrebounding its opponent 31-9 and limiting them to 15-of-41 shooting. Maybe Prospect can’t be this good every game. But after what coach John Camardella called “a great week of practice and getting our team healthy,” his Knights (5-4) went out Tuesday afternoon and won their opening game at the Wheeling Wildcat Hardwood Classic in convincing fashion 69-44 over Loyola.

    Former St. Viator quarterback and University of South Dakota senior Dante Warren has been invited to play in the second annual Football Championship Subdivision Senior Scout Bowl on Saturday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Loyola center and Palatine resident Robert Delaney and Carmel linebacker and Gurnee resident Seamus Quilty are two of three recipients of the Bears Community Champion Award.
