Perfect opener for Kraimer, Barrington Mar 30, 2013 12:00 AM
Considering the weather for the past three weeks, Saturday's mid 50-degree temperatures were perfect for area teams to start their softball seasons. And it was a perfect start for Barrington senior Cassidy Kraimer. The right-hander threw the first perfect game for the Fillies since sophomore Kiley Dolezal on April 25, 2009. Kraimer's gem on Saturday was a 16-0 five-inning victory over Lane Tech and completed the Fillies sweep in their own quad.

Pensions top $100,000 for 42% of District 211 retired educators Mar 6, 2013 12:00 AM
In Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211, 42.5 percent of retired educators receive pensions of more than $100,000 a year, according to state retirement system data. Other suburban schools, including Stevenson High School District 125, Leyden High School District 212 and Fenton High School District 100, aren't far behind. Across the suburbs, 7 percent of retired public school educators get six-figure pensions, compared to less than 1 percent downstate.

Kevin Schimel (13) and Ryan Blaha (13) and Robert Hudson (12) were double-figures scorer for Conant’s boys basketball team in a 71-36 victory at Hoffman Estates in the Mid-Suburban West.Conant improved to 15-10 and 5-4 in the West.Joe Biko scored 15 points three 3-pointer to lead Hoffman (4-17, 0-9).

It was fitting that Angie Kirchoff’s shooting touch gave Barrington the breathing room it needed needed to pick up a victory on Friday night.After all, it was Kirchoff’s sweet shooting in the third quarter that helped the Fillies girls basketball team erase a 6-point deficit. And her most important shots came in a pressure-packed situation at the foul line as her 2 free throws with eight seconds left turned a 1-point lead into a 41-38 victory over Conant in Mid-Suburban West action.

Rolling Meadows clinches in MSL East Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
After playing in only one Mid-Suburban League girls basketball championship game in 30 years, Rolling Meadows is now going to the showcase game for the second season in a row. With an 85-29 victory over visiting Wheeling, the Mustangs (23-1) clinched the MSL East on Tuesday with a 9-0 record and one game left on Friday. Meadows will host Fremd (21-7, 7-2) for the MSL crown a week from today.

Less than 65 seconds into Friday's West Suburban Conference Gold game, Leyden's girls basketball team found itself trailing 8-0 visiting Morton. "That did make things tough," said Eagles senior guard Victoria Galizia, who will play for North Central College next season. "Right away, the momentum went into Morton's hands." The Mustangs increased the lead to 10-0 with 5:37 left in the first quarter and never looked back while recording a 50-34 triumph.

With a 56-35 victory over Johnsburg on Wednesday nights, St. Viator's girls basketball team felt it was on the right track. The Lions kept the wheels spinning straight ahead when they raised the curtain for their own 30th annual Snowflake Tournament on Saturday night. Led by junior Erin Fabbri (14 points), sophomore Jessica Hohlweg (12) and senior Michelle Presslak (10), St. Viator rolled to a 54-19 victory over Northside College Prep in the Cahill Gymnasium.

Less than 24 hours after battling Lake County powerhouse Stevenson in a tough two-set loss, Hersey's girls volleyball team bounced back in its own Ken Carter Gymnasium for a 25-18 25-8 victory over visiting Wheeling. With seniors Ann Mullen-Muhr (14-of-14) and Erica Hill (9-of-9) each putting down 8 kills on Tuesday night, the Huskies improved to 4-0 in the Mid-Suburban East and 9-3 overall.

Leyden raises $14,234 for pediatric cancer research May 1, 2012 12:00 AM
District 212 students and staff raised $14,234 for pediatric cancer research during the 2012 St. Baldricks Foundation fundraiser. The St. Baldricks event first began at West Leyden in 2008. Since that time, the East and West campuses have combined forces and have raised a total of $59,860 in four years.

A study of the salaries of 14,217 public schoolteachers in 89 area school districts showed 10 percent earned more than $100,000. Quality teaching is important. But if education isn't affordable to the community, it won't be sustainable.

A group called Northwest Suburban Taxpayers United charges that local school district are hoarding money they should return to taxpayers. They say 16 local districts have $1.1 billion in unrestricted funds, much more than they believe is necessary.
