  • Teonic era begins at Larkin Aug 27, 2014 12:48 PM
The Larkin football program begins the 2014 season in a precarious position from a participation standpoint, but new coach Dragan Teonic believes that corner has already been turned. Hired in May after he spent four years turning struggling Hersey into a playoff team, Teonic isn’t concerned that the Larkin program has only 48 players between the varsity and sophomores combined, so few, in fact, that the two groups will play together as a varsity team on Friday nights. Those who don’t get enough playing time on Fridays will compete in junior varsity games on Saturday mornings.

  • Burlington Central second at Larkin invite Aug 20, 2014 10:27 PM
It looks like life will go on just fine in the post-Matt Weber era for the Burlington Central boys’ golf team. In their first tournament since the departure of the Fox Valley area’s top golfer from a year ago, the Rockets finished in second place in the Larkin Invitational at The Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin on Wednesday. Central recorded a team score of 320 just 2 strokes behind the tournament winner DeKalb.

  • Adult court sought for 3 teens in Elgin beating Jun 9, 2014 5:05 PM
Kane County prosecutors requested Monday that three Elgin teens accused of beating and robbing an 87-year-old man Saturday, be prosecuted as adults. Judge Thomas Mueller did not rule on that issue Monday, but he did deny a request to let them out of the county youth jail, noting the seriousness of the crime. “Quite honestly, they don’t get more serious this, except for murder,” Mueller said.

  • Burlington Central 3rd in Class 2A May 31, 2014 10:04 PM
During the more than three-hour bus ride to Eastern Illinois University, the members of the Burlington Central track team knew that winning at a trophy at the Class 2A state track and field championships this weekend at O’Brien Field was more than possible. That is, if the Rockets did what they were capable of. The formula was simple. Watch junior Lucas Ege run real fast in his hurdles races and in the two relays and let the chips fall where they may. Of course, Ege had plenty of help too. SIU-Edwardsville-bound senior Matt O’Connor would place second in the 800-meter run to add 8 very valuable points. But even with all of that, it would take a fantastic performance from Ege, O’Connor, Casey Matthews and Kyle Neubauer in the 1,600-meter relay to end the meet to give the Rockets the final push in points they would need.

  • Burlington Central in Class 2A trophy position May 30, 2014 8:32 PM
As coach Mike Schmidt was hoping, the Burlington Central Rockets boys track and field team put itself in prime position for big things in the team race Saturday at the IHSA state meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field. Junior Lucas Ege is seeded second in the 300 hurdles and 110 high hurdles after a relatively stress-free qualifying session.

  • Defensive gems pave way for Huntley win May 28, 2014 10:30 PM
If stars were placed next to the names of the Huntley fielders who made great plays in Wednesday’s 4-0 playoff win over Larkin, the score book would have looked like a chart of the galaxy by game’s end. Huntley defenders made the routine plays, the smart plays and the stellar plays in support of senior right-hander Eric Luecht (7-2). He limited the fourth-seeded Royals (15-20) to 3 hits and 4 walks and struck out 5 in an 85-pitch performance to outduel Larkin senior Jack McCracken (7-3).

  • King’s strong outing lifts Larkin May 26, 2014 9:18 PM
If Will King was feeling any pressure about getting the assignment to start Larkin’s opening round playoff game on Monday he certainly didn’t show it. The junior right-hander was brilliant, tossing 5⅓ innings of shutout baseball, to lead the host Royals to a 4-0 win over Rockford Jefferson (5-22) in the play-in game of the Class 4A DeKalb regional. Larkin (15-19) earns a shot at top-seeded Huntley on Wednesday.
