Most of the hype lately surrounding the Larkin boys basketball team has centered around the post players, but on Wednesday night it was the Royals’ little guys who were making the big difference. The guards combined for 40 points in leading Larkin to a 60-40 win at Streamwood in the Upstate Eight River opener for both teams. Junior Keyvon Kyles scored a game-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers. AJ Hunter came of the bench to add 11 points.

  • Rockford Auburn denies Larkin tourney title Nov 29, 2014 10:24 PM
It wasn’t Rockford Auburn’s two Division I signees who hurt Larkin, it was the “other guys.” The Royals and Knights met for the championship of the inaugural 205 Tipoff Classic Saturday night and it was the host Knights who walked away with the trophy, downing the Royals, 82-54, at Dolph Stanley Gymnasium in Rockford.

  • Larkin downs Rockford East Nov 24, 2014 10:24 PM
Larkin’s season-opening win against Rockford East was something like an accordion: Larkin would stretch the lead to double digits, then the E-Rabs would squeeze back into it only to watch the Royals extend the lead again. Larkin finished the game on one of those runs, outscoring the host E-Rabs 14-4 after East had gotten within 2 points to come away with the 79-67 victory in the inaugural game of the 205 Tipoff Classic in Rockford.

  • Larkin gets the message, tops Richmond-Burton Nov 22, 2014 6:39 PM
Larkin girls basketball coach Ruben Flores must have gotten his message across. Flores subbed all five players — including four starters — with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter Saturday afternoon, trailing Richmond-Burton 7-4. That group returned a minute later, down 10-6. The Royals outscored the Rockets by 10-4 the rest of the quarter and never trailed again in a 61-45 victory in Pool B play at the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

The game was tied 27-27 at halftime. However, both of the Royals’ starting guards, Marlee Kyles and Quixmia Washington, were limited in the second half because of foul trouble.

  • Bartlett-Streamwood’s Filipek UEC 50, 100 champ Nov 1, 2014 9:48 PM
The 50-yard freestyle is the most unforgiving race in a swim meet. The race is often broken down as “a start, a flip turn and a finish.” But mess up on any of those three, or during the two lengths of the pool that comprise the race, and someone else wins. Bartlett-Streamwood’s Kayla Filipek was the best in the 50 freestyle at Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Waubonsie Valley. The sophomore covered the distance in 24.24, six-tenths faster than second-placed Samantha Sauer from St. Charles North.
