  • Larkin downs Rockford East Nov 24, 2014 10:24 PM
Larkin’s season-opening win against Rockford East was something like an accordion: Larkin would stretch the lead to double digits, then the E-Rabs would squeeze back into it only to watch the Royals extend the lead again. Larkin finished the game on one of those runs, outscoring the host E-Rabs 14-4 after East had gotten within 2 points to come away with the 79-67 victory in the inaugural game of the 205 Tipoff Classic in Rockford.

The Royals outscored the Rockets by 10-4 the rest of the quarter and never trailed again in a 61-45 victory in Pool B play at the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

  • Bartlett-Streamwood’s Filipek UEC 50, 100 champ Nov 1, 2014 9:48 PM
The 50-yard freestyle is the most unforgiving race in a swim meet. The race is often broken down as “a start, a flip turn and a finish.” But mess up on any of those three, or during the two lengths of the pool that comprise the race, and someone else wins. Bartlett-Streamwood’s Kayla Filipek was the best in the 50 freestyle at Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Waubonsie Valley. The sophomore covered the distance in 24.24, six-tenths faster than second-placed Samantha Sauer from St. Charles North.
