    Patience at the plate is easy to have when the opposing pitcher isn't close to the strike zone. Larkin took advantage of Rockford Jefferson starter Mitch Gorsuch's ineffectiveness Monday afternoon. Gorsuch walked the first three batters — two of whom scored — and 5 of the 12 batters he faced as the Royals scored five times in the first two innings to beat the J-Hawks, 7-0, in the play-in game of the Class 4A DeKalb regional.

    Elgin's Jessca Rago went 3-for-3 with 2 home runs, including a grand slam, and 5 RBI on Saturday morning. But that wasn't the part of her effort she was most pleased with against crosstown rival Larkin. The freshman allowed just 2 hits in the pitchers circle to help the Maroons top the Royals, 12-1, in five innings.

    Whether you were a Jacobs tennis player graduating or not, Saturday was quite the celebration to say the least. The Golden Eagles, who qualified all 6 of their participants in the Elgin sectional to state, won the sectional with 29 points, the program's first sectional championship. South Elgin placed second with 24 and Hampshire was third with 21. The meet, which was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. was moved up to 2 hours to accommodate Jacobs' graduation at the Sears Centre.

    Senior Mike Bianchina served as an alternate runner for Geneva when it won its last boys track and field sectional title in 2010.Three years later in the Hoffman Estates Class 3A sectional, Bianchina helped the Vikings to their second title in four years.Despite finishing tied for sixth out of 14 teams at the Upstate Conference tourney last week, Geneva rose to the occasion on Friday night and scored 103 points to top runner-up Schaumburg (88) and St. Charles North (80)."I always thought about it (going out with a sectional title after being part of one as a freshman)," Bianchina said. "This was a great night for the entire team."

    Any Upstate Eight Conference baseball game involving St. Charles East drips with tension this week as the Saints and Batavia vie for the River Division title. Senior starting pitcher Matt Sarai calmed some raw nerves Wednesday by limiting Larkin to a lone run on 8 hits, but the Saints didn't exhale collectively until senior Sean Dunne delivered a grand slam in the top of the seventh of a 7-1 victory.

    Batavia repeats UEC River title May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
    Brad Nelson picked up right where Bob Kummer and Nelson's girls team left off. Nelson guided the Batavia boys tennis team to the Upstate Eight River Division conference championship Saturday in his first season as the boys coach, replacing the longtime boys coach Kummer. "We won the girls one in the fall on these courts (at Elgin) actually. To come back in the spring with the guys is special to keep things going for coach Kummer with what he left us with after winning it last year," Nelson said.

    The Burlington Central baseball team clinched the outright Big Northern Conference East Division championship with an 8-2 victory at Rockford Christian in six innings Thursday. The BNC East title is the second straight for Central (11-8, 10-2) and the program's fourth in five seasons.

    Beloved Larkin High School teacher dies at 56 May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Larkin High School nursing teacher around whom hundreds have rallied in recent months as she struggled to recover from multiple strokes and fight a rare form of cancer died Tuesday at age 56. Deborah Daly, of Bartlett, started teaching at Larkin High School in 2002 and went on to sponsor the Health Occupations Students of America where she helped numerous students on a path toward careers in the health fields.
