Glenbrook South springs sectional surprise May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
A great season for Mundelein’s softball team came to a shocking end Tuesday. Glenbrook South, the No. 17 seed in the 21-team Class 4A Rolling Meadows sectional complex, upset the third-seeded Mustangs 6-4 in the Glenbrook South regional semifinals. The Titans — who will play in Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today’s game between No. 6 Lake Zurich and No. 11 Glenbrook North — snapped a 4-4 tie with 2 runs in the sixth inning. Mundelein (25-11) got a double from Lauren Fairweather.

Richter, Drain bring the pain as PR stops Grant May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Mighty Maddie Drain delivered pain. Her Prairie Ridge softball teammate Marissa Richter provided a different kind of hurt an earlier inning. Leading off the bottom of the second inning of Tuesday’s Class 4A Grant regional semifinal, the 6-foot-2 Drain smacked a line drive that caught Grant pitcher Caitlyn Moran flush on the right thigh. The softball was sure to leave a mark of black-and-blue variety. For Moran, her pain wasn’t season-ending. When approached by the home-plate umpire to see if she was OK, the wounded ace, determined to keep playing, gave him a thumbs-up. In the first inning, Richter had touched Moran for a 3-run homer, propelling regional top seed Prairie Ridge to a 4-0 over No. 4 Grant in Fox Lake.

Sporting All The Benefits May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Do you think sports are all fun and games? While that is not incorrect, the truth of the matter lies in the obvious fact that a child who participates in a sport is offered far more benefits than just having an enjoyable time. Although some may argue participating in a sport is a distraction and a time consuming activity, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention declares otherwise. Childhood obesity has reached an all time high, doubling in children and tripling in adolescents over the past 30 years. In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. With obesity becoming such a prevalent issue, it is no fallacy that children need to increase their physical activity, and what better way to start then by participating in a sport.

COD paves new way to earn bachelor's degreeMay 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Nine students will walk across the stage Sunday at Lewis University's commencement ceremony to receive bachelor's degrees in criminal justice. Yet, these students never took classes at the school's campus in Romeoville. Through a so-called 3+1 program partnership between Lewis and College of DuPage, the students earned their four-year degrees from Lewis by taking all their classes at COD's campus in Glen Ellyn.

Ellis’ winning hue: A second coat of blue May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
She blended nearly as perfectly as she ran. All dressed in blue on the O'Brien Stadium blue, under a blue sky, with blue bleachers above, Warren Blue Devil Brittny Ellis dominated in her Year Two at EIU. "Last year was just totally new for me," the speedy sophomore said. "I didn't know what was going on. "But now," she added, smiling, "I feel like I belong here." So true, girl in blue. Her feats may have been new to the IHSA track world last spring, but what Ellis does on a track is getting old, yet no less exhilarating. She won the Class 3A 400-meter dash for the second year in a row Saturday, successfully defending her title by burning off a 54.34 to edge the equally amazing Cameron Pettigrew. The Chicago Payton star sped to a time of 54.84.

Matt Loeffl came up with the winning hit when he ripped a bases-loaded, one-out single to plate Jay Hoffman, who had earlier doubled.

A pitchers duel between Wauconda's Kayla Wedl and South Elgin's Paige Allen ended in a 2-1 Bulldogs win in 8 innings.

Grant garners first sectional title May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Grant boys track and field coach Tom Evans spent Friday evening watching a parade of his Bulldogs qualify for next week's state meet in Charleston, but he continued pacing the infield nervously once the final event of the Class 3A Huntley sectional had concluded. Runner-up sectional finishes the previous two seasons tend to have that effect on a coach. Moments later his nervousness was replaced by excitement and pride as the North Suburban Conference champions were announced as sectional champions for the first time in school history. Grant garnered 83 team points to run away from Fox Valley Conference champion Huntley and NIC-10 Conference champion Belvidere North, which finished tied with 56 points.

Warren’s Ellis in title pursuit(s) May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Warren sophomore Brittny Ellis is back in the running for a state title. Or, rather two state titles, as she advanced near the front of the pack in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes in Class 3A. Ellis won her qualifying 400 qualifying heat in 55.18 on Friday in the girls track and field state meet preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University.
