Administer Justice held its Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Saturday, April 11, at the Elgin Country Club. The nonprofit provides free civil legal assistance, financial counseling and educational services to low-income individuals. Each year, the organization gathers to celebrate the dedicated volunteers who make the work of Administer Justice possible.
U of I Extension to host bird flu conference call

Although the bird flu virus has not yet been reported in Illinois, its presence in several Midwestern states is close enough to home to cause concern. University of Illinois Extension will host a one-hour conference call to address questions about avian influenza on Thursday, April 30.

Lake Zurich residents will pay more for drinking water and sanitary sewer service starting next month. "The water and sewer fund has been struggling for years to try to keep up with the aging infrastructure," village Finance Director Jodie Hartman said. "It's a fact that many municipalities across the region are experiencing, probably across the country."
Athletic fields could be part of future for Lake Zurich's Kuechmann Park

Lacrosse nets and baseballs could be part of the landscape at Lake Zurich's Kuechmann Park. Ela Township wants to buy the village government-owned, 8-acre site off Old Rand Road and divide the property between athletic fields and a nature area. At least one Lake Zurich resident has spoken out against the idea.
Illinois prepares as poultry in Midwest infected with bird flu

Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has been reported in the Midwest, causing illness among poultry and temporarily disrupting deliveries and supplies of eggs. Although the virus has not been seen in Illinois, University of Illinois, Department of Animal Sciences Professor Kenneth Koelkebeck is alerting poultry farmers in the state so that they can take necessary precautions to avoid infection in their flocks.

An effort to ban red-light cameras in smaller suburbs moved forward in an Illinois House committee. If it passes, some towns that would have to get rid of the cameras are Roselle, Villa Park, Westmont, Winfield, Deer Park, Fox Lake, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Wauconda and Fox River Grove.

Learn how to quit from an expert presenter at tobacco cessation workshops at the College of Lake County on April 29. A pioneering expert in smoking cessation, Carol Southard, will present two one-hour workshops, at 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., in the C Wing Auditorium (Room C005), Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. The sessions are free and open to the public.
