Defense attorney: Accuser recanted in trafficking case May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
A downstate woman who told police she was the victim of human trafficking has recanted her statements against two Chicago men charged in the case, a defense attorney said Monday. Defense attorney Eric F. Rinehart told Lake County Judge Victoria Rossetti that the unidentified woman now says in video and on her Facebook page that she was never forced to work as a prostitute by Aaron Thurmond, 23, of the 10000 block of Walden Park.

CLC would be part of test program meant to create jobs May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
College of Lake County and three other 2-year schools would be part of a test job-training program under a measure recently passed by the Illinois Senate. It would allow the colleges to custom design workforce training programs to benefit new or expanding companies, and those businesses would have to create new jobs. It's modeled after programs in three other states.

Nine students will walk across the stage Sunday at Lewis University's commencement ceremony to receive bachelor's degrees in criminal justice. Yet, these students never took classes at the school's campus in Romeoville. Through a so-called 3+1 program partnership between Lewis and College of DuPage, the students earned their four-year degrees from Lewis by taking all their classes at COD's campus in Glen Ellyn.

As college seniors enter the workforce, some are frustrated by one factor that still enters the salary equation -- gender. According to the American Association of University Women, a gender pay gap not only exists, but it develops right away. Women working full time one year after graduation are paid an average of 18 percent less than men also working full time one year later. “We were really trying to get at a group that was as close to the same as possible right out of college," said Christianne Corbett of the AAUW. "And we still found a gap.”

Included in the 550 or so students who donned caps and gowns Saturday at Harper College's commencement was a contingent not yet old enough to vote, but qualified to take vital signs, transfer patients and practice infection control. A total of 18 high-schoolers, 17 from Wheeling High School alone, walked after completing their Certified Nursing Assistant certificate, among the numerous fast-growing dual credit options that Harper offers.

There was nothing but black and green atop the victory stand Saturday afternoon when the Stevenson boys tennis sectional came to a close on the sun-kissed courts of the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. The Patriots recorded a clean sweep at doubles, then watched a nearly three-hour match finally swing in favor of freshman Benjamin Bush over senior Varun Parekh (Barrington). That outcome gave the hosts Patriots a third-place singles medal to go along its championship singles hardware from Jeremy Bush as Stevenson wrapped up the team title.

James Ealy, 48, of Lake Villa, will finally stand trial Monday for the murder at a Burger King on Grand Avenue in Lindenhurst.
