    In fall 2010, Harper College and its feeder high school districts formed an unprecedented partnership to shrink student success gaps and better prepare students for career and college readiness. More than halfway through the four-year pilot program, leaders believe they're onto something.     Lake County Housing Authority's Chairman of the Board, R. Delacy Peters, and Commissioner Cranston Byrd were among the honorees at the 2013 Most Influential African Americans of Lake County awards ceremony recently hosted by the People's Voice newspaper. Also, Jackie Cunningham, who is involved with LCHA's Self-Sufficiency program, was recognized as one of the Most Influential African-Americans of Lake County for Community Service.

    The talk of this year's Chain O’ Lakes Ice Fishin’ Derby and Winter Festival was the 40-inch catfish caught Sunday by an Ingleside family. Despite the rain and warm temperatures, hundreds of ice fishermen, from as far away as Canada and Germany, were able to fish near Channel Lake in Antioch.

    Lake Zurich officials are amenable to a proposed craft distillery on Main Street. Copper Fiddle Distillery, proposed by two partners from Hawthorn Woods, would sell crafted whiskeys, gins and other speciality liquors. “These are the kind of unique things that would help separate us from some other communities that don’t have these things and are looking for them,” Trustee Tom Poynton said. “I’m 100 proof for this.”

    A suburban lawmaker has proposed legislation that could help alleviate the heroin problem both in the suburbs and across the state. The proposal, written by State Rep. Sam Yingling, a Round Lake Beach Democrat, would form a bipartisan Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force to identify how the state can help. The task force will be given until the end of June 2014 to conduct a study of heroin use problems in Illinois high schools and suggest programs they can use to address the problem.

    Greg Herriges first began writing his latest novel, about a family coping with their 9-year old daughter’s battle with leukemia, more than a decade ago. Six months into his research, the Harper College English professor’s own family began living the plot. Herriges’ nephew was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic childhood leukemia - the same potentially devastating disease affecting the book’s main character - and Herriges put his writing on hold, using his research to simply better understand the illness and answer his family’s questions.

    Two men have been charged with stealing more than $12,000 worth of cold medicine from drugstores in Illinois and Wisconsin, Lincolnshire police said Thursday. Drashawn J. Griffin, 21, of the 500 block of Beechwood Drive in Round Lake, and Dave L. Windham, 23, of 2800 block of Elizabeth Lane in Zion, are in Lake County jail on $100,000 bond after being charged with multiple counts of burglary and retail theft via an emergency exit, police Investigator Adam Hyde said.

    Storm disrupts flights from O’Hare to east coast Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
    The snow has stopped falling in the Chicago area, but flights at O'Hare International Airport continue to be canceled due to a winter storm pounding the east coast. Nearly 250 flights have been canceled at O'Hare this morning as the storm that dumped up to 10-inches overnight in Lake County heads to the east coast.

    Carmel Catholic’s Lauren Feely is looking forward to next week’s state gymnastics meet at Palatine, but it won’t be the same this year. Feely chalked up the all-around championship with a 38.175 Thursday night in the Stevenson sectional. She also flew to top honors on vault (9.85) and floor exercise (9.65), while placing third on uneven parallel bars (9.5) and fourth on beam (9.175).
