Man pleads guilty to drug charge, won’t get alligator back Feb 10, 2013 12:00 AM
A Cary man lost his five-foot long alligator after an October 2011 drug bust, but is getting another chance to move forward without a felony conviction. Nicholas R. Cosmano, 27, recently pleaded guilty to misdemeanor marijuana possession and was sentenced to a year of conditional discharge, 40 hours community service, random drug tests, counseling, drug addiction treatment, and fined $4,400, court records show.

Lawsuit: St. Charles art dealer lost $103,000 French lithograph Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
An insurance company has sued a St. Charles art dealer for $103,000, arguing the dealer lost an original lithography by the French artist, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. "Artistide Bruant dans son Cabaret, 1893" is regarded by some as one of Lautrec's most recognizable pieces. The defendant in the case has had financial problems, including a foreclosure that a bank started but later called off.

Carpentersville man sues police over 2011 drive-by arrest Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
A Carpentersville man who was arrested in July 2011 on attempted murder charges from a drive-by shooting but later exonerated when prosecutors dropped the charges in August 2012 has filed a federal lawsuit. Abraham Barajas, 24, argues his rights were violated by police, who did not conduct a thorough investigation and ignored evidence favorable to him.

Campton Hills leaders want to hire administrator Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Campton Hills trustees have given the go-ahead in their 2014 budget to have a village administrator. Ideally, they'd like to have a person hired by June, when the 2014 fiscal year starts. In coming months, the village's finance committee will hash out how much can be set aside and if that person is full- or part-time. Village President Patsy Smith has basically worn an administrator's hat for the last 5-plus years.

Storm disrupts flights from O’Hare to east coast Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The snow has stopped falling in the Chicago area, but flights at O'Hare International Airport continue to be canceled due to a winter storm pounding the east coast. Nearly 250 flights have been canceled at O'Hare this morning as the storm that dumped up to 10-inches overnight in Lake County heads to the east coast.

More charges in Batavia assisted living center thefts, forgeries Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
A 19-year-old caretaker at a Batavia assisted-living facility who was arrested in December on charges that she stole and forged a $1,000 check from a resident now faces a new batch of charges. Batavia police say Teejana S. Perry of Warrenville stole from four other victims at the center. Warrants have been issued for the new charges; Perry is next due in court on Feb. 21.

Kane County will give Jeffers control of health departmentFeb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The interim executive director of the Kane County Public Health Department is set to drop the "interim" from her title when the full county board meets next week. Barb Jeffers took over when the former director, Paul Kuehnert, resigned. Her handling of a fatal dog mauling in Big Rock went a long way in winning the job.

No Kane County court security strike; sides will meet again Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Kane County officials and court security officers, who have been working without a contract since late 2008, are exchanging proposals and will meet again on Feb. 19. The court security officers are on the job today although they have presented the county last week with a five-day notice to strike.

Only 23 medieval girdle books have survived in their original form, but visitors to Elgin Community College can see a replica of this 13th-through-16th-century status symbol at an exhibition that recently opened. The artwork of eight Elgin Community College graphic design faculty members will be displayed through Saturday, Feb. 16, in Safety-Kleen Gallery One inside the ECC Arts Center, Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Kane court security union meets with county, could strike Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM

First Baptist in Elgin marks 175th anniversary Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
This year marks the 175th anniversary of First Baptist Church in Elgin, which claims the title of the second-oldest church in the city. The church, located on 8.5 acres at 1735 W. Highland Ave., plans to mark the occasion with a big picnic on July 14, the exact date of its founding 175 years ago.

Bond set for third suspect in Aurora hammer slaying Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
A judge set bail at $100,000 for the third man implicated in last week's murder of Abigail Villalpando, a 18-year-old West Aurora High School student. Jose M. Becerra, 20, of Oswego, is charged with concealment of a homicide; police say he helped move Villalpando's body to Montgomery after another person killed her with a hammer and burned her remains in a barrel.
