    Seniors at Jacobs, Hampshire and Dundee-Crown high schools will have the opportunity to take a new math class next year with a textbook designed especially for them. The course was developed by the Alliance for College Readiness which includes Elgin Community College and all of its feeder high school districts — Elgin Area School District U-46, St. Charles Community Unit District 303, Burlington-based Central Unit District 301, and Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300, the only district to offer the course next year.

    A new business expecting to generate $18.5 million of sales in its first five years in St. Charles has told city officials it can’t afford to relocate to the city unless it receives a tax incentive of up to $70,000. The city obliged. Representatives from motorcycle dealer Windy City Triumph want to relocate to St. Charles by leasing an unused portion of the Fox River Harley-Davidson building at 131 S. Randall Road. That’s the same location US Adventure RV hoped to relocate to when it secured a tax incentive from aldermen back in January.

    A 32-year-old Batavia woman was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to her fourth DUI. Jeanette Baum was more than twice the legal intoxication threshold Nov. 27, 2012 when she crashed into a utility box in Batavia after dropping her child off at school. Baum also was on probation for a drug charge at the time.

     
  • Cary man pleads guilty to export scheme May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
    A 44-year-old Cary man has pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud charges Monday, admitting he bilked as many as 10 clients out of more than $1 million. Prosecutors said Clare Thomas Anderson obtained payments in advance for shipping wood pulp and other raw materials to mainly foreign customers that never arrived.

    Elgin cocaine dealer gets 5 years in prison May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
    A 32-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to cocaine charges after authorities searched his Elgin home last July. Jayson P. Sturdivant, of Elgin, was on probation for a felony drug charge in 2010, pleaded guilty late Friday in exchange for prosecutors dropping the most serious charges that could have landed him in prison up to 30 years. His trial was set for Monday.

    When Danny Heck was in eighth grade, he and his friends made an Indiana Jones movie with a camcorder. He had such a good time it prompted some research into the film industry and how one could go about breaking into it. Heck, now a senior at Hampshire High School, has worked with Nicole Thompson, the high school librarian, and the District 300 Foundation over the last year on videos for school and district events. "That's when I really knew that this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life," Heck said.

    Local officials Saturday welcomed President Barack Obama action declaring suburban counties hit by heavy flooding last month federal disaster areas, saying it will help the recovery. "There are many of our residents who don't even have flood insurance, and this is going to help them out," said Lisle Mayor Joe Broda. "We were keeping our fingers crossed that we would, in fact, qualify because it's really going to aid our folks in moving forward."
