    There were several new beginnings for the girls basketball programs at Westminster Christian and Harvest Christian Monday night and if the result is any indicator of things to come, the Lions could be doing a lot of roaring this season. Junior Montini transfer Paulina Castro poured in 28 points in her Harvest Christian debut and senior Kylee Knox, who has already scored more than 1,000 points in her Lions’ career, added 18 as Harvest rolled to a 68-29 win in the opening round of the Harvest Christian Thanksgiving Tournament.

    Huntley senior Keegan Smith has been the anchor for Red Raiders all season, and he continued to pace his team in the Class 3A state cross country race at Detweiller Park Saturday. Smith jumped out with the leaders for the first two miles before settling in for a ninth place finish in 14:36.

    Jacobs senior Lauren Van Vlierbergen announced on Thursday that she will be signing a letter of intent with University of Michigan. On Saturday at the Class 3A state girls cross country meet Van Vlierbergen sealed her spot as one of the state’s top runners by delivering a second-place finish in a swift 16:48 at Detweiller Park.

    It was the same old song and dance for Harvest Christian on Saturday as another great season ended on a sour note for the fourth straight year in the Class 1A supersectional. But despite the disappointing 25-18, 25-10 loss on their home floor to Keith Country Day the mood was rather upbeat afterward for the Lions as seniors reflected back on the legacy they have left behind, underclassmen looked forward to what lies ahead, and coach Kim Floyd praised the team for this year’s accomplishments.

    Harvest Christian has traveled down the road to the Class 1A supersectional the past three seasons only to hit a roadblock. The Lions are hoping to finally reach their ultimate destination when they get another chance on their home court Saturday to advance to the state finals after capturing their fourth straight sectional title with a 25-23, 25-12 win over Newark on Thursday at Westminster Christian.

    For Streamwood senior girls’ cross-country standout Gabby Juarez, it was time to play with the big dogs. Juarez adjusted her running strategy a bit this year and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. Juarez recently won a Class 3A sectional individual title and will try to add some more hardware to her collection at Saturday’s state finals race in Peoria at Detweiller Park.

    Harvest Christian nearly won its sectional semifinal match by forfeit. The Lions eventually got to take the court, but not for very long. Ellie Burzlaff had 8 kills and the Harvest servers racked up 16 aces in downing St. Francis de Sales, 25-6, 25-5, in the Class 1A Westminster Christian sectional Tuesday.

    Patty Langanis and Karen Naymola have coached their respective girls volleyball teams against each other many times since Naymola played for Langanis at Cary-Grove. Tuesday night, though, will be the first time they have matched wits in the postseason. Langanis’ Trojans will take on Naymola’s Huntley Red Raiders in the 5:30 p.m. semifinal of the Class 4A Crystal Lake South sectional, followed by the host Gators facing Hononegah.

    Harvest Christian finished fourth at the Class 1A Lisle boys cross country sectional Saturday to qualify as a team for the state meet. The Lions had 168 points. Westmont won with 118, while Montini, Beecher and Peotone also qualified as teams.

    Ellie Burzlaff and Mikayla Robinson each had 8 kills and Burzlaff served 7 aces Thursday night to lead Harvest Christian to a 25-6, 25-14 win over Westminster Christian in the championship match of the Class 1A Chicagoland Jewish girls volleyball regional in Deerfield.

    Harvest Christian and Westminster Christian took care of business Tuesday night and now Elgin’s two Class 1A girls volleyball teams, whose schools reside within a mile of each other, will travel to Deerfield Thursday for a regional championship.

    Lauren Van Vlierbergen, Gabby Juarez and Kelly Meehleib took the first steps toward Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday in convincing fashion. Van Vlierbergen, the Jacobs senior who finished fourth in the Class 3A state girls cross country meet last season, won the Class 3A Palatine regional Saturday while Juarez, Streamwood’s senior speedster who was 49th at state in 2013, was the individual champion at the Class 3A Glenbard North regional. Meehleib, a Huntley senior who did not qualify for state last year, was the champion at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford regional, also leading her team to the title.

  • Huntley’s Smith wins regional title Oct 25, 2014 7:41 PM
    Huntley junior Keagan Smith beat the field on Saturday, winning the individual championship at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford boys cross country regional. Smith ran the course in a time of 15:03.22, almost 33 seconds better than Hononegah’s Jared Christiansen.

    Harvest Christian saved the best for last on Thursday night in its final tuneup of the regular season before beginning its quest for a fourth straight regional title next week. After splitting the first 2 games against visiting Elgin the Lions woke from their slumber and dominated game 3 to complete a 25-20, 20-25, 25-7 nonconference win on senior night.

    The Road to Redbird opens for business Monday night as girls volleyball teams in all four classes around the state embark on the postseason. In the Fox Valley area, several interesting scenarios could develop as teams vie for a spot in the IHSA Final Four at Redbird Arena in Normal the weekend of Nov. 14-15.
